Indiana University Bloomington, the flagship campus of Indiana University and a major research-intensive university, is accepting applications for an endowed chair faculty position. The Edward A. and Mary Lou Otting Chair in Special Education will reside in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education. The position is at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with Tenure.
The Otting Chair will have access to generous endowment funds to enhance research and teaching activities that promote the mission established by the donors, to promote research in developmental disabilities and personnel preparation, and advance the Chair’s own vision for the Department. The position includes opportunities and expectations for leadership in areas such as expanding doctoral student research options through external funding, leading one or more special education programs (e.g., doctoral, undergraduate teacher preparation, and master’s), and promoting the integration of special education with other programs.
The special education program at IU has a long history of producing high-impact research and developing programs to address the needs of individuals with disabilities and their families in local and global contexts. The Otting Chair resources allow the program to expand its world-class faculty by extending its expertise in the scholarship of developmental disabilities and teacher education.
We are interested in applicants that represent a diverse pool of scholars who have a well-established track record of research, teaching, and practical expertise in special education. We seek candidates with an active research agenda, experience in teacher preparation, and service contributions that, together, advance inclusion and respect for all people. Responsibilities include:
    • Acquiring internal and external funds to support research and development projects relevant to developmental disabilities.
    • Conducting research and disseminating it in prominent professional journals and other venues.
    • Supervising doctoral students in their coursework and research and serving on dissertation committees.
    • Teaching and supervising undergraduate and graduate courses in special education.
    • Collaborating with colleagues in the department and across the School of Education and University.

Basic Qualifications
Required Qualifications for the Edward A. and Mary Lou Otting Chair
  • An earned doctorate in special education or a closely related field. Candidates should have academic credentials for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Demonstrated program of scholarship and external funding in special education, with emphasis on developmental disabilities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to preparing students for positions as teachers, faculty, or other roles related to special education policy or practice.
  • Experience teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.
