Job Description

Applications are invited for a full-time Professor in Experimental and Translational Radiobiology in the Division of Cancer Sciences.

To pioneer pre-clinical and translational radiobiology research, and thus drive the next generation of healthcare innovations, will aim to appoint a Chair to develop and lead a cutting-edge programme with an emphasis on proton beam therapy. You will join a unique and thriving ecosystem spanning discovery science, translational research and clinical studies, supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure and a vibrant Radiotherapy Related Research team, a cross-institutional group of international renown. You will also join a unique collaboration between the University and The Christie NHS Trust, which hosts one of only two high-energy NHS Proton Beam Therapy centres in the UK, thereby providing access to:

  • A thriving clinical environment treating ~750 patients per year
  • A dedicated proton research room with FLASH capabilities, including high throughput automation
  • State-of-the-art external beam radiobiology research facilities for in vitro and in vivo studies
  • Substantial physics and engineering support

You will have a vision for how your research will address key clinical questions in radiobiology, and you will bring something new to Manchester, e.g. new ideas, new ways of working. You will be an emerging leader, driving exciting research that enhances our strengths, and we will support you with an appropriate start-up package. You will already appreciate that training the next generation is both important and rewarding, and we will provide you with opportunities to shape our undergraduate teaching programmes and postgraduate training pathways.

At Manchester, we embrace, celebrate and respect difference. We support each other to create an environment where everyone is able to reach their full potential. The Division’s ethos is to promote an inclusive and representative environment where all staff and students have voices with potential to influence positive change. We encourage applications from talented individuals from wide and diverse backgrounds, and in particular those currently underrepresented. The School of Medical Sciences holds a Silver Athena SWAN award which recognises good practice in relation to gender, flexible working arrangements, family-friendly policies, and good work-life balance. All appointments are made on merit.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers
