The School of Chemistry at UNSW is recognised nationally and internationally, for producing world-class fundamental and applied research in the field of Chemical Sciences to address real-world challenges. The School's research is focused on five key themes: Health, Energy. Advanced Materials, New Chemical Frontiers and Knowledge Exchange.

The Centre Business Manager engages with industry stakeholders, organisations and government to establish new connections and develop partnerships for the UNSW Master of Industrial Research course, managed by the ARC Training Centre for the Chemical Industries (ARC ITTC).

Working closely with contributors on both sides, the Centre Business Manager will be at the nexus between Industry and University, attracting more interest by potential Industry partners and being the be the point of contact for industry. At the same time, the Centre Business Manager is responsible for academic matters such identification of new Master of Industrial Research Students. 

About the role

  • $123k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 2 years
  • Full-time (35 hours per week)

The Centre Business Manager reports to the centre co-director at UNSW and has no direct reports.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

Externally:

  • Promote the Master of Industrial Research (MIR) program to external stakeholders from industry, industry organisations and government organisations.
  • Promote the School of Chemistry’s research portfolio of capabilities to external partners to drive knowledge exchange revenue, engagement and impact.
  • Proactively seek and identify new opportunities to grow and develop new opportunities for the ARC ITTC
  • Successfully negotiate new commitments to support MIR students from potential industry partners on behalf of the ARC ITTC.
  • Lead the search for suitable MIR students and connect industry partner, University academic and MIR students
  • Establish and maintain constructive relationships with industry and university stakeholders

Internally:

  • Support the operations of the Centre at UNSW, and related research programs, and provide high-level support to the ARC-ITTC Chemical Industries Deputy Director, Node leaders and other Chief Investigators in all operational matters.
  • Coordinate contracts between UNSW and partner organisations and resolve any issues
  • Prepare reports, relating to the running of the Centre and related training research activities at UNSW. This includes monitoring and reporting on the achievements, output and activities.
  • Work with the Node leaders at UNSW and Swinburne, and other Centre professional staff at other institutions, contribute to developing consistent and efficient processes between nodes, and to assist with the organisation of Centre-wide initiatives.
  • Engage with UNSW Knowledge Exchange
  • Act as point of contact for all Master students, assist in identifying University courses and enable suitable training and registration when using UNSW facilities
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant
(Selection Criteria)

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications, preferably in chemical, physical or mathematical sciences or similar and/or knowledge gained through substantial relevant experience.
  • Demonstrate ability in engaging with industry to create partnerships and establish external networks
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven understanding of technical requirements involved in managing projects
  • High level interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise and negotiate effectively with a diverse range of people including industry, academic staff, university administrators, MIR students and the general public
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse, plan, organise and review workflows and processes to ensure efficient service delivery
  • Be proactive and motivated with strong stakeholder and relationship management skills
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
