Description:

Under the general direction of the Director, Information Technology (IT), the Business Officer is responsible for the overall financial and administrative operations of the Education Commons at OISE. The incumbent collaborates on operational, financial, and administrative planning related to academic, research and administrative technology provisions at OISE, as well as within the University and with OISE’s partners in the broader educational community.

 

Major responsibilities will include: providing a full range of financial support activities, including developing preliminary budget plans, forecast reports and performing detailed variance analyses for review with the Director; preparing and processing journal entries, expense reports, invoices, purchase requisitions and bank deposits; conducting month-end and year-end reconciliation for expenses and revenues. Under the direction of the Director, the Business Officer will also be responsible for budgeting and forecasting on OISE’s computer renewal plan through the procurement of technological equipment, while in compliance with the University’s procurement and financial policies and procedures.

 

The Business Officer will work closely with the CAO office and the Office of the Associate Dean of Research, International and Innovation during the pre-award phase by working vendors to get quotes, in-kind contributions and other discounts for all the technological aspects of research grants (CFI, SSHRC, etc.). In the post-award phase, the Business Officer will work with the CAO office and the departmental business officer to manage technological purchases and provide support and status updates to the Senior Financial Officer for research reporting obligations.

 

The Business Officer also supports the administration of HR related activities through the preparation and timely processing of payroll documents (timesheets, attendance, vacation, etc.); coordinating, monitoring and tracking employee information (vacation, leaves, attendance) and by keeping well informed on changes to HR policies, procedures, collective agreements and applicable legislative requirements preparation. The Business Officer also supervises the daily activities of the Business Support Analyst.


Qualifications:

Education:
University Degree in Commerce, Business, Accounting, Finance, IT Business Management or a related discipline, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:
Minimum five (5) years’ related experience in a similar environment. Demonstrated experience with principles of project management and financial management.

 

Skills:
• Expertise in use of enterprise systems to manage financial and HR functions and related business operations. Knowledge of HRIS and FIS.
• Extremely Knowledgeable regarding university policies and guidelines relevant to IT business operations.
• Experience fostering cooperative working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts.
• Highly developed interpersonal skills to maintain a collegial and team-oriented environment while maintaining consistent customer service standards.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Effective problem-solving/troubleshooting skills, strong customer service orientation.
• Excellent attention to detail, specifically with regards to highly technical specifications and recognizing the critical importance of these details

 

Other:
• Ability to prioritize workload, multi-task, manage multiple priorities, as well as deal with unexpected situations as they arise.
• Ability to negotiate with outside vendors, internal senior academic administrators and professional managers.
• Ability to analyze and assess options, make recommendations and assessments as part of a team responsible for efficient and effective client service and operations

Pay Scale Group and Hiring Rate: USW Pay Band 15 -- $83,481 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $106,758. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
