Billing Compliance Manager

Position Summary

Reporting to the Department Administrator and Office of Billing Compliance, with accountability to the Department Compliance Leaders, the Compliance Manager is responsible for the direct oversight of all billing compliance activities within the Department of Emergency Medicine, and provides continuing compliance education to all members of the Department. The Compliance Officer will manage and administer all regulatory programs in the clinical and research divisions of the Department.


Responsibilities

  • Implements the application of all Columbia University compliance guidelines, regulations, policies and recommendations within the department.
  • Directs the application of The University's and The Department's compliance plans. Revise the departmental compliance plan annually.
  • Develops department specific compliance educational programs focused on the department's documentation, coding, and billing processes.
  • Coordinates the departmental pre-billing review process.
  • Randomizes quality control transaction reviews to assure adherence to documentation standards.
  • Monitors the quality of the pre-billing transaction reviews.
  • Prepares and disseminates compliance information to all departmental staff and faculty.
  • Develops and maintains departmental compliance log reporting all compliance concerns and corrective action towards resolution.
  • Submits compliance log monthly to the Health Sciences Office for Billing Compliance, with major concerns reported immediately.
  • Develops monthly analytic reports based on the compliance activities within the department.
  • Works with Billing Supervisor on post-payment transaction reviews.
  • Provides general oversight of all billing activities, as they relate to compliance, within the department.
  • Develops methodology, implement, and monitor research related billing activities within the department.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four years of related experience.
  • Must hold a current CPC certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of CPT code and ICD-10.
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures and applicable local, state, federal, agency regulations.
  • Knowledge of electronic medical record systems such as Allscripts, Epic, etc.
  • Ability to work under pressure with multiple and competing deadlines required.
  • Must be highly organized, with excellent communication and follow through skills.
  • Must have proven record of ability to work as part of a team, with administrative, clinical, research, and financial staff.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, and web-based database applications preferred.
