Job summary

The Electrochemical Science & Engineering Group is a multi-disciplinary and inter-departmental group at the forefront of its field. Due to the rapid growth of our group we now require a full-time laboratory manager to manage our state-of-the-art facilities.

 Battery development is a fast-emerging field in energy storage and we work at the interface between the science and engineering of electrochemical devices. Currently we are focussed on automotive and stationary power applications, researching lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors amongst others. We have an extensive and expanding portfolio of research grants, with the top scientists and engineers in the field solving real-world problems.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • management of the facilities allocated to the ESE Group, prioritising safety within the hazardous environment and ensuring smooth day to day running of laboratory activities.
  • providing training and safety instruction to new users of the laboratory equipment
  • provide help, expertise and assistance where possible in other departmental research facilities, to fellow members of technical staff and researchers
  • enabling research by acting as the designated person for ESE Group allocated facilities and, by working closely with managers, suppliers and contractors to plan and monitor works to ensure key deadlines are achieved.

Essential requirements



    • You should hold a minimum of 2 A levels in a relevant subject or have an equivalent vocational qualification and/or work experience.


    • You must have experience working with and maintaining modern, sophisticated equipment


    • You should have experience in managing local health and safety protocols, including writing risk assessments and controlling/reducing hazards where possible


    • Knowledge of batteries and electrical systems would be considered an advantage

This is a fixed term position up to February 2021 in the first instance.
