Description

Public Scholarship and Engagement seeks an existing tenured member of the UC Davis Academic Senate faculty to serve in a 75% time, three-year, administrative appointment as Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs. Public Scholarship and Engagement functions as an academic unit on behalf of the Offices of the Chancellor and the Provost, under the direction of the Vice Provost of Public Scholarship. The Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs has primary responsibility for working with academic units, the Academic Senate and Federation, and serving as liaison to UC Davis faculty.

The Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs oversees programs with strong connections to the university’s ten colleges and schools. In addition, the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs is expected to represent Public Scholarship when the Vice Provost is not available.

Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs is to promote, facilitate, and provide leadership for UC Davis faculty to pursue and expand publicly-engaged research, teaching and learning, programs and initiatives. The Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs’ priorities will be guided by objectives under Public Scholarship and Engagement’s goal to reward and recognize public scholarship in research, teaching, and creative practice:
• Objective 1.3: Integrate public scholarship with UC Davis’ colleges, schools, and other academic units to support activities and increase outputs.
• Objective 1.4: Introduce ways to recognize public scholarship in university policies, program reviews, and faculty recruitment, merit, advancement and promotion reviews.

The Associate Vice Provost for Academic Programs must consult and collaborate with appropriate campus academic units, senate and administrative committees and administrators, as well as relevant UC system-wide offices, to promote and recognize public scholarship and engagement across UC Davis.

Essential activities include:

  1. Assisting academic units in identifying and achieving academic excellence through public scholarship efforts by working with relevant faculty and deans in the Colleges, Schools, and other campus units.
  2. Implementing recommendations from the Provost’s Work Group on Public Scholarship with respect to strategies that recognize public scholarship in university policies, program reviews, and faculty recruitment, merit, advancement and promotion reviews.
  3. Establishing, facilitating, and coordinating a Faculty Liaison Council in coordination with college and school deans.
  4. Administering faculty fellowship, grants, and other recognition programs.
  5. Partnering with college and school deans and other academic units to secure resources for faculty fellowships and grants.
  6. Establishing, facilitating, and coordinating a public scholars peer network to support faculty mentorship, development, and training.
  7. Establishing, facilitating, and coordinating a public impact research work group to foster and expand research activities in collaboration with the Office of Research.
  8. Working with department chairs to develop engagement action plans, identify faculty development and mentorship needs, and consult with individual faculty.
  9. Assisting the Vice Provost of Public Scholarship with faculty nomination, review, and selection for grants, awards and committees.
  10. Participating in regular meetings with the Public Scholarship and Engagement leadership team.
  11. Attending and actively participating in appropriate professional meetings and conferences to keep abreast of developments in public scholarship and engagement.
  12. Serving as Vice Provost of Public Scholarship delegate in executive meetings, university and non-university events.
  13. Assisting Vice Provost of Public Scholarship with special projects as needed.
