Position Summary

Michigan State University seeks an experienced and proven leader of major gift driven development programs.  The individual will be an action-oriented implementer of Advancement programs designed to generate revenue in a donor-centric, sustainable fashion.  The Associate Vice President will be a seasoned and talented manager of people, programs and resources.   

The Associate Vice President of University Advancement at Michigan State University reports to the Vice President of University Advancement.  While the VP will provide strong overall leadership for all aspects of MSU’s advancement program, the AVP will be a leader and partner helping to lead all MSU fundraising staff – both in the University Development Central Office and in all constituencies, major units and regions. 

The AVP is Advancement’s chief operating officer, providing visionary leadership for University Advancement, developing and executing plans to ensure that MSU can rely on an increasing and sustainable flow of philanthropic support.  Having completed the university’s Empower Extraordinary campaign, exceeding $1.8 billion dollars in 2018, the Associate Vice President will be called on to provide leadership in a number of crucial areas, including – 

 Increasing the level of fundraising productivity and success, moving MSU to the upper tier of the Big Ten peer group 

  • Developing innovative alumni engagement programs in partnership with the Executive Director of the MSU Alumni Office 

  • Enhancing the strong culture of philanthropy across campus 

  • Continuing to strengthen the development and alumni engagement staff through professional development and training, coaching and recruitment 

  • Building strong collaborative partnerships across campus 

The Associate Vice President’s major areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to, the following: 

 Provide overall strategic direction to University Advancement and be responsible for the creation and implementation of its strategic plan, with emphasis on Development and Alumni Engagement. 

  • Service as the chief operating officer for University Advancement, and oversee the day-to-day operations and activities of the unit. 

  • Report regularly on progress toward strategic goals, providing such reports to the unit as a whole as appropriate. 

  • Advise key university officers on opportunities for their involvement with specific fundraising and engagement events and initiatives. 

  • Maintain a small portfolio of major prospects, particularly where there are multiple complex university relationships and the opportunity exists to have university-wide impact that requires thoughtful, experienced, prospect management. 

  • Prepare and oversee the annual budget. 

  • Supervise the University Development executive directors; hiring and personnel decisions, establish performance goals and objectives, and expedite the professional development and training of such staff. 

  • Lead the development of annual operating plan process for all units within Advancement. 

  • Foster diversity at all levels of the organization, including the professional staff, the volunteer corps and the constituencies served.   

  • Play a leadership role in appropriate regional and national professional organizations. 

  • Perform other such duties as may be delegated by the Vice President of University Advancement.

Required Degree

Bachelors -Fundraising

Minimum Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in any rigorous academic field and a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience as a development leader and manager in a complex, decentralized, comprehensive university environment is required.  An advanced degree and professional fundraising certification is preferred. 

  • Experience managing a large team of fundraisers with a focus on utilizing metrics, systems, and relationship building skills to maximize strategic cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors 

  • A deep understanding of and commitment to an integrated advancement program; and experience in a complex major research university environment.  Keen understanding of the natural tension that exists when working with a multitude of colleges, departments, and programs with varying priorities is essential. 

  • Experience working to sustain strong working relationships with staff, donors, faculty, volunteers and academic leadership is imperative. 

  • A strong ability to develop sincere, productive relationships and to build trust both with internal colleagues and external constituencies is a must. 

  • Clear and effective written and oral communication and presentation skills, including individual and large groups.  Keen sense of requirements necessary to foster a team-centric culture and environment.
