The University of Manchester Library is one of the five UK National Research Libraries and the only one in the north of England. It is the third largest academic library system in the United Kingdom at the heart of the country’s largest single-site university. It is the largest non-legal deposit library and holds the most extensive digital collections of any library in the UK. From leading-edge learning spaces and digital environments through to the gothic masterpiece of The John Rylands Library, The University of Manchester Library provides researchers, students and our wider communities with unique collections, spaces and professional knowledge.

The University of Manchester holds one of the acknowledged great special collections of the world. The Directorate of Curatorial Practices looks out to multiple audiences and curates, conserves, interprets and transforms our collections in all formats. The collections are managed in The John Rylands Library and in two special collections reading rooms in the Main Library, one of which is dedicated to Manchester’s cartographic collection, which is one of the most extensive in Europe.

Reporting to the John Rylands University Librarian you will take a lead role in developing the international reputation of The John Rylands Library and act as the senior archivist and special collections professional for The University of Manchester Library.

You will continue to develop The John Rylands Library as the most remarkable university special collections library in the world and as a major cultural institution in its own right. Along with other members of The University of Manchester Library Executive Team, you would be required to deputise for and represent the John Rylands University Librarian as necessary.

You will have an extensive knowledge of research needs in the use of historic materials with the ability to engage collaboratively on research projects with the John Rylands Research Institute. The Institute is a unique partnership between a major research library and a research institute. Together they support many international research Fellowships, for example with the Folger Library, the Newberry Library, the Huntington Library and with the Library of Congress in the production of world-leading scholarship and its dissemination and impact on society.

The Associate Director, Curatorial Practices is a strategically critical role and a proven ability to negotiate and influence both within and beyond the University is key. Successful experience of leadership at a senior level with a proven ability to inspire, delegate and empower staff is essential.

You will hold a formal qualification in archival studies and ideally will have a strong background in the understanding and interpretation of internationally significant archival, manuscript and rare book collections.

As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons and all appointments will be made on merit. As we are committed to the principles of the Race Equality Charter Mark, we would particularly welcome applications from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community who are currently under-represented at this level in this area.
