Stanford University is seeking an Associate Director of Instructional Development (Administrative Services Administrator 2) to join the Office of Medical Education Evaluation and Instructional Development team. Our team’s mission is to enhance medical education and teaching through rigorous qualitative and quantitative data analysis and delivery of results and resources for improvement to faculty. We study the impacts of curricular programs and innovations on student satisfaction and learning outcomes to help guide curricular decision-making. The work environment is collaborative and learning-centered, with high expectations for work product and productivity. Our team provides support for projects associated with the required MD curriculum and major education programs and initiatives constituting millions of dollars of investment. We also provide resources and consultation to faculty, students and staff who want to engage with program evaluation and data, and use research findings for continuous quality improvement.

Evaluation and Instructional Development is a division of the Office of Medical Education (OME) within the School of Medicine Educational Programs and Services (EPS).

Duties include: 
  • Lead the Evaluation and Instructional Development team’s collaboration efforts related to instructional improvement in service of improving the required MD curriculum. On an ongoing basis, meet with faculty to advise them of instructional resources and best practices and deliver resources to course administrators.  
  • Coach faculty on the development of optimal assessment tools and how to best use such tools to improve their quality of instruction.
  • Work with the Teaching and Mentoring Academy to develop and coordinate peer coaching training/sessions and informally observe (non-evaluative) course sessions and provide feedback to faculty.
  • Conduct (quantitative and qualitative?) research on and keep apprised of current developments related to best practices in instructional innovation and learning theory and disseminate the results to stakeholders. Make recommendations to senior staff, faculty, and Associate Deans on new methods of instruction.
  • Lead instructional improvement efforts as needed with other Stanford departments, such as Educational Technology at School of Medicine, the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning and SOM Teaching and Mentoring Academy.
  • Design strategies and lead change initiatives in relation to the instructional development of individual faculty in accordance with continuous improvement standards and processes and LCME standards. 
  • Work directly with faculty and course administrators to act on evaluation results in the improvement of course design and instruction, through training and one-on-one sessions. Develop individualized coaching plans with faculty related to specific instructional improvement goals, and a plan with specific actionable outcomes related to student support and success. 
  • Advise faculty on applying adult learning theory and best practices to their instruction and course design.
  • Provide functional supervision of the Data Analyst in support of instructional improvement needs, including helping design/create interactive and innovative course materials.

  • Master’s degree in Education, Health Sciences, or related field.  
  • Experience in faculty development and a demonstrated understanding of the instructional needs of faculty and course administrators.
  • Strong background in the science of learning and teaching/adult learning theory.
  • A history of building strong relationships different stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to adeptly manage sensitive and difficult conversations, and a growth mindset. 
Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to accomplish goals working through formal and informal channels, with diplomacy and tactfulness.
