Position description

The Armenian Music Program at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music provides an in-depth exploration of Armenia’s rich musical heritage, with a focus on its classical traditions and scholarly research. A hallmark of the School’s innovative leadership in music and its commitment to public outreach, through dynamic performances and academic scholarship, the Program has evolved into a vibrant educational platform. The mission of the Armenian Music Program is to preserve and celebrate Armenian music as an art form. This Program engages communities of musicians, scholars, and audience members across the UCLA campus, Los Angeles, nationally, and internationally.

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music seeks a distinguished scholar, university-level instructor, and experienced organizer to be the Associate Director, under the title of Academic Administrator Level I, of the UCLA Armenian Music Program (AMP), and to teach School of Music courses.

The position is for a three-year appointment at 100 %. On average, about 60% time will be devoted to teaching, 30% to research, and 10% to administration and co-Artistic leadership of the Armenian Music Program. The appointment will be in one of the School of Music Departments appropriate for the candidate; a Ph.D. in Musicology, Ethnomusicology or a related field, or a D.M.A. in Music, is required.

The Academic Administrator should have expertise in Armenian studies, with the potential for establishing strong connections and contributions to one of the AMP’s important campus partners, the UCLA Promise Armenian Institute at the UCLA International Institute. The successful candidate will assist the AMP Director with scholarly programming and outreach for the Program, and will also enhance research and instructional capabilities in ethnomusicology and other fields relevant to the AMP, including working with and teaching undergraduate and graduate students.

The Associate Director would teach the equivalent of three courses per year, pursue research, and work with the Director of the Armenian Music Program as co-artistic Director of the Program, with emphasis in the areas of ethnomusicology, scholarship, and archiving. The courses taught would include specialized graduate courses for music majors, in cooperation with the Departments in the School of Music, as well as campus-wide undergraduate Armenian music appreciation courses.

The Associate Director will report to the Director of Armenian Music Program.
