Position description

The California Writing Project (CWP) seeks to hire an Associate Director responsible for designing, promoting, implementing, and evaluating state-wide programs within the CWP network of sites. In this position the Associate Director is expected manage these programs with a great deal of independence. The appointee will be expected to perform as a senior-level professional, serving as a thought partner in the formulation of goals, the development of promising strategies by which to pursue those goals, and the integration of these into strategic planning efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Managing communication between CWP’s State Office and the regional sites within the network.
• Designing and overseeing programs for writing project affiliated teachers. These programs will vary in length from single day to multi-year.
• Promoting programs to Site Directors and Teacher-leaders
• Implementing a variety of programs for Teacher-leaders
• Evaluating a variety of programs for Teacher-leaders
• Assisting the State Office with grant applications to the California Subject Matter Project and other funders
• Attending recurring CWP Leadership Team & Site Director meetings
• Reviewing CWP Site grant applications to CWP’s State Office
• Organizing and facilitating a state-wide writing group. The group will meet over the course of 2-4 months. There will be at least one cycle per year.
• Organizing publication of writing from CWP Teacher-leaders.
• Assisting with the development and organization of CWP’s James Gray Memorial Preconvention affiliated with CATE’s annual convention.
• Assisting with other CSMP (California Subject Matter Project) initiatives.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Four-year college degree.

Preferred qualifications

Masters or Ph.D. Preferred.
Classroom teaching experience.
Experience working in program administration, preferably in an academic setting and with faculty.
Experience in public relations and working with community, media, and non-profit organizations preferred.
Strong communication and writing skills.
Experience in a leadership role in educational professional development preferred.
Familiarity with California Writing Project and/or South Coast Writing Project.
Ability to work independently to complete assigned tasks.
Ability to work with diverse populations.
