Senior Extension Associate - Director, Cornell ILR Buffalo - ILR School, Cornell University

The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an immediate opening for a Senior Extension Associate - Director, Cornell ILR Buffalo within Cornell ILR Buffalo Co-Lab in the Extension/Outreach Division of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations. The Senior Extension Associate is responsible for developing and delivering programs and services that are closely aligned with the strategic mission and core values of the ILR School, and for monitoring quality, impact, and outcomes of education, training, technical assistance, consulting and research activities of the program. The Senior Extension Associate will participate with other academic staff in setting thematic unit goals and will annually set individual programmatic and budgetary goals with the Executive Director. This position of Senior Extension Associate reports to the Associate Dean of Outreach.

Senior Extension Associate is a non-tenure track, academic term position with up to a five-year initial appointment. The position may be reappointed on the basis of recommendations by the appropriate Associate Dean as well as available funding and work.

Project Related Emphasis:
The Director will oversee and manage the activities of the Buffalo Co-Lab, and provide vision and strategic direction for its sustainable development. Cornell ILR Buffalo Co-Lab is a collaborative research, teaching, and public knowledge center for progressive economic development in Greater Buffalo. Through actionable research, internships, workshops and forums, curriculum development and credit courses, consultation, and public policy formation, Buffalo Co-Lab advances an equitable economy and a democratic community.

Key components of ILR Buffalo Co-Lab include:
• Dynamic policy and legal expertise on workplace, labor, and economic development issues, utilized in collaboration with the broad civic infrastructure of the region and key community partner, the Partnership for the Public Good
• Community-engaged learning for Cornell and ILR students through the flagship programs of High Road Fellowships, Democracy Summer Fellowships, and Careers in Public Service
• Technical economic geography expertise for spatial analysis of economic problems and solutions and policy development, including Data for Equitable Economic Development and Sustainability (Good DEEDS)
• Interactive digital library of Buffalo-based research and civic information, extensive researchers network, and education for the public through Buffalo Commons
• Visiting Community Scholars exchange between Buffalo and the Cornell campus in Ithaca

The Director will provide leadership for the unit and for ILR Outreach, working collaboratively with other Outreach Leads on the School’s public engagement. Responsible for providing substantive expertise in state, local and national public policy matters related to the world of work and the economy, teach in those areas, and develop productive relationships with government officials and other policy organizations concerned with legislation and policy application. Will also guide collaborations that expand the ILR Co-Lab model of place-based economic and community development to other cities or regions in New York. This role provides opportunities for cooperation with other extension and resident faculty on research, teaching and policy projects that advance ILR’s land-grant mission, as well as opportunities to connect with students and alums to promote ILR’s unique education and scholarship.

Required Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in (Master’s, doctoral or law) in law, economics, political science, labor relations, or related field
  • Relevant professional leadership and network development at the state, regional, national, and/or international areas in relevant professional, trade, policy, or public networks.
  • Minimum of six to eight years teaching related courses in college-level or professional environment, conducting training to relevant target audience, and/or conducting research in the thematic content area.
  • Demonstrated writing ability and scholarly record in the thematic content area (articles in peer-reviewed journals, articles in trade publications, practitioner journals, research and project reports, informational brochures, policy briefs, etc.).
  • Minimum of one to three years demonstrated experience in promoting thematic area program teaching, consultation, and research services to regional, state, or national networks through the use of in-person, print, and electronic mediums.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising, leading teams, mentoring, and coaching; five to seven years preferred.
  • Experience in organizational development and planning
  • Excellent public speaking and critical thinking skills
  • Commitment to equity and democratic practice
  • Ability to work well in groups and with diverse community partners
  • Knowledge of and experience with Western New York regional social-political economy

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in related field.
  • Minimum of three to five years demonstrated experience in large project management (e.g. several staff and budgets exceeding $500,000).
  • Professional credentials in disciplinary area, such as appropriate state and national licensure, certifications, etc.
  • Minimum of three to five years demonstrated experience in successful grant writing and grant management.
  • Minimum of three to five years of experience with virtual / distance learning.

This is a full-time non-tenure track academic benefits eligible up to five-year term opportunity based at the ILR School Buffalo location at 617 Main Street, Suite 300.
