Position Summary

The Associate Dean for Administration (ADA) is a key member of the College of Nursing (CON) senior administrative team and reports to the Dean. The ADA provides leadership and strategic planning for the administrative, personnel and financial operations of the college. The ADA exercises independent judgment and decision making in the management and oversight of diverse, complex, and high-level college responsibilities. The ADA provides advice and counsel to the Dean on a wide array of matters including strategic financial planning, human resources, space and facilities management, professional nursing development opportunities and initiatives, and instructional support services such as technology and equipment. The ADA is likewise responsible for drafting, implementing, and revising policies related to these areas and for the day-to-day direction of business operations. This is a full-time faculty position in the MSU tenure, Health Programs (HP), or fixed-term faculty appointment system.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ability to deconstruct and analyze complex issues and offer creative and/or innovative solutions.
  • Advise the Dean in setting budget and financial policy and procedures for the college; provide business and financial oversight; monitor college accounts to ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance with university, state, federal and professional standards.
  • Provide analysis and strategies to the Dean in key areas including fiscal planning and compensation under current and proposed new programming. Coordinate creation of multi-year financial projections and forecasts.
  • Develop special reports and analyses to support the Dean in decision-making about revenue and expenditure planning, tuition and other revenue income, cost reporting, and business best practices.
  • Lead the budgeting, cost accounting, fiscal reporting, reconciliation, and financial compliance activities of the college.
  • Ensure budgets and allocations align with strategic priorities.
  • Represent the college to, and collaborate with, senior university leadership in the Office of Planning and Budgets, Office of the General Counsel, Office of Health Sciences, Faculty and Academic Staff Affairs, Human Resources, Employee Relations, and Chief Information Officer; serve as the Dean’s representative or college liaison on related university-level committees and workgroups.
  • Oversee strategies and implementation of best practices for the recruitment, hiring, assessment, promotion and termination of faculty, academic staff, and support staff, with full consideration to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and justice.
  • Assure that each search committee has a DEI member.
  • Ensure consistent CON processes, procedures and documentation for human resources and financial system access, time reporting, vacation and sick time use, FMLA, annual performance reviews, maintenance of job descriptions, and related activities.
  • Participate collaboratively with the Dean, Dean’s senior leadership team and college faculty on development and annual updating of the college’s overall strategic plan and evaluation plan; lead implementation of administrative and operational projects or initiatives to achieve goals and objectives of the strategic plan.
  • Oversee the college’s information technology and instructional support operations (i.e., learning management software, simulation/lab equipment) to ensure appropriate funding for hardware, software, and staff support.
  • Oversee the space, equipment and utilization of the college’s nursing learning lab and simulation center.
  • Responsible for development and implementation of policies and procedures for space allocation and management; identify, secure funding for and lead major renovation or fit-out projects; oversee Spartan Space inventory and coordinate the college’s response to the university’s annual Alterations and Improvement (A&I) and Space Planning processes.
  • Oversee the development and coordination of strategic professional nursing development initiatives.
  • Serve as the Dean’s deputy for administrative affairs and operations. Develop long-range plans, strategies, and annual reports; provide expertise, analysis and interpretation of studies and data to assist the Dean in decision-making. Represent the Dean at meetings as requested.
  • Plan, assign and review the work of administrative staff. Hire, train and develop staff to ensure efficient and effective performance and continuous quality improvement.

Minimum Requirements

This is a faculty position requiring a terminal degree; preferably in Nursing or another closely related field. A master’s degree in business, accounting or management is strongly preferred, although significant experience in leadership positions with responsibility for complex administrative and financial functions and thorough knowledge of business, finance, and human resources principles and practices, preferably in a university setting, will be considered. The successful candidate will also have excellent communication skills; the ability to create, lead, manage and develop a team of individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and expertise; a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; the willingness and ability to develop and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders; and a person who will be respected and recognized for their integrity and ethical values.

Desired Qualifications

Prefer a terminal degree in Nursing or another closely related field.
