Position description

The Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing is seeking an academically distinguished nurse scientist, with exceptional collaborative and entrepreneurial leadership abilities, to become the Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship, an architect of the School’s research enterprise and to hold a tenured Professor or Associate Professor faculty position. An earned PhD or equivalent from an accredited institution in Nursing or related field, evidence of a distinguished program of research and scholarly activity, and qualifications for a tenured faculty position at the rank of Full Professor or Associate Professor are required.

The UCI Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing, set within a nationally ranked public university for NIH funding, offers a world class program shaping the nursing profession and serving Orange County and the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, which has a population exceeding 18 million people. As an integral part of UCI, the School has been committed to innovative research, quality clinical care, and nursing education at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Led by Dean Mark Lazenby, RN, PhD, FAAN, the School’s mission is to “produce leaders in research, education, and clinical practice who will champion collaborative, compassionate, and interdisciplinary evidence-based practice.” The School’s faculty and staff are committed to the tripartite mission inclusive of education, research, and service. The Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship will provide leadership for this exciting time as the University and School of Nursing meet the needs of our diverse community and expand our programs and scholarship.

The new Associate Dean will be the scientific leader of the organization and is expected to be a nationally recognized scholar in their field of study with a demonstrated ability to serve as a mentor and champion for faculty research.
In addition, the Associate Dean will be influential in advocacy for the current research expertise and interests of the faculty and students. The Associate Dean will interact with external and internal stakeholders, including government agencies, donors, and affiliated organizations on behalf of the School and Dean.
The Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship must bring vision to the task of building the School’s research enterprise, coupled with an ability to communicate in a fashion that inspires others to expand the research footprint of UCI within the School, the greater Los Angeles area, and with academic peers across the nation.

The Associate Dean is responsible for providing leadership, guidance, and mentorship in research to faculty, students, and staff in advancing the research program of the School. The Associate Dean will serve as the institutional leader who shapes and directs the strategic scientific vision for the School. They will identify and facilitate research collaborations among faculty within the School and between the School and other research units across UCI, other UC campuses, and in the community. The Associate Dean will also strengthen the School by identifying new ideas and opportunities to expand research initiatives and increase the impact both of the institution and individual researchers – including key relationships with other UCI entities. The Associate Dean will recruit, lead, and retain talent committed to the principals of producing high quality research in alignment with the strategic and operational goals of the School and UCI. They will promote and increase the national standing of the School by their own work, as well as assisting the most talented scientists to achieve national and international recognition. The Associate Dean will administratively supervise the School's research activities, including pre- and post-award management of grants.

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

The successful candidate will be a scholar and leader with a recognized scholarly reputation that includes demonstrated potential for collaborative, credible research leadership, and a clear commitment to nursing research and scholarship. Preferred experience and qualifications also include:
• Eligibility to practice and maintain licensure as an RN in the State of California is preferred.
• Serves in current leadership roles on state and/or national nursing organizations.
• A successful research leadership record at a highly respected nursing school.
• Strategic planning expertise and capability to establish a compelling vision for the School’s research portfolio.
• Leadership ability to hold people accountable for implementation of the research vision.
• Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of research programs, relevant federal and state laws and regulations, and demonstrated knowledge of applicable best practices.
• Exhibits strong executive presence and outstanding communication skills, including interpersonal communication skills.
• Generates and encourages creative ideas, innovative thinking, and imaginative solutions to issues or problems, while at the same time assures accountability for disciplined goal setting, ongoing measurement, and sustained achievement of results.
• An individual with a powerful commitment to education and faculty development.
• Possesses a collaborative and entrepreneurial leadership style characterized by upfront and direct communications, courageous and creative ideas, willingness to take calculated risks, openness to criticism and improvements, tolerance for mistakes, and decisive and results oriented behavior.
• Has effective written and oral communications skills, as well as the ability to work successfully in a team environment.
• A track record of developing effective and trusted relationships at all levels.
• Demonstrated experience in thinking innovative and creating opportunities.
