Position Summary

Michigan State University invites applications for the position of Associate Dean for Inclusion and Diversity (ADID) in the College of Engineering, with a preferred starting date of August 16, 2022.  The individual selected will also be appointed as a tenured faculty member at the associate or full professor level in an appropriate department in the college.

The College of Engineering is one of the oldest and largest colleges at MSU, the original land-grant institution in the United States. The College has been graduating bachelors-level engineers since 1888 and began granting master's degrees in 1901 and PhDs in 1946. The College currently has 6,200 undergraduate students, with 22 percent of them women and 8 percent underrepresented minorities. The College also has almost 1,000 graduate students and about 30,000 alumni. There are 235 tenure-system faculty members, 125 fixed-term faculty and academic staff, and 115 support staff members in the College.  Research is highly interdisciplinary, with themes spanning eight (8) departments including computational sciences, energy, health, manufacturing, materials, mobility, security, and sustainability. Degrees are offered in biomedical engineering; biosystems and agricultural engineering; civil engineering; environmental engineering; chemical engineering; materials science and engineering; computational mathematics, science and engineering; computer science and engineering; electrical engineering; computer engineering; mechanical engineering, and applied engineering sciences.  External research expenditures are $50 million annually.  Student enrollment demands suggest continued steady growth of instruction, research and staff.

In partnership with the Dean and College leadership, the ADID will have overall responsibility for College policy, practice and programmatic initiatives designed to enhance and maintain an inclusive culture, enhance diversity and foster professional and leadership development for faculty, students and staff.  Specific duties include: 

  1. Serve as a member of the Dean’s Cabinet, the senior leadership team in the College, which works collaboratively on College planning and management.   
  2. Provide leadership towards achieving diversity, equity and inclusion through all areas of the College by developing and overseeing policies, practices and programmatic initiatives and coordinated integrated approaches with the goal of creating a more multicultural and welcoming environment for faculty, staff and students.
  3. Develop new policies and programs to support students, faculty and staff to facilitate improvements in inclusiveness in College activities. Oversee fundraising activities in support of program development. 
  4. Oversee faculty development activities, including departmental mentoring programs and College activities that support professional development and advancement. 
  5. Supervise the Assistant Dean for Student Inclusion and Diversity and oversee the Women in Engineering Program, the Diversity Programs Office, and Future Spartan Engineers (undergraduate recruiting). 
  6. Coordinate with other College administrators, faculty and staff, and represent the College on issues involving inclusion and professional and leadership development.  Function as the College liaison to the Council of Diversity Deans, Office of Institutional Equity, Office for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, and the Office of Faculty and Academic Staff Development within the Office of the Provost. 
  7. Work closely with the Faculty Excellence Advocate, who provides an independent voice for faculty in the college and for process fairness in academic personnel actions. 
  8. Manage the nomination process for College level, university level and national awards. 
  9. Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Engineering.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Engineering or a closely related field

Minimum Requirements

  • The successful candidate must have an earned PhD in an engineering or closely related discipline, and be qualified for an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with tenure. 
  • The candidate must provide evidence of experience in the development and implementation of diversity, equity and inclusion-related policy and programs.
  • The candidate must possess skills in communicating effectively with broad audiences, working with diverse teams to achieve results, and affecting change management in a complex academic organization.
  • The candidate must also demonstrate sustained excellence in research, teaching and service as well as scientific and organizational leadership and educational innovation within an academic environment.
  • The candidate should have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, a distinguished track record of research and funding from diverse sources, and evidence of effectiveness as a teacher in one or more of the disciplines in the College.
