Position description

The University of California, Davis Health is recruiting for an Associate Clinical Strategy Officer. This is a part-time administrative position open only to INTERNAL candidates. Candidates should have an existing faculty appointment at the Full Professor rank in an Academic Senate or Non-Senate faculty series in a clinical department at UC Davis School of Medicine. This is not a Change in Title opportunity.

The Strategy Office is seeking an Associate Clinical Strategy Officer to add to its team to help guide the development and execution of strategic opportunities, provide better strategic communications to our faculty, and represent their strategic needs and perspectives at a senior leadership level. This part-time position is between 20-50% effort. Initial appointment will be for a one-year appointment, renewable annually for up to 3 years.

This clinical leader must have a high degree of knowledge of healthcare systems and delivery, UC Davis Health (UCDH) operations, and the interface of research, education, and clinical care that characterizes academic health systems. The successful candidate will be an experienced professional with recognized clinical expertise who knows how to put theory into practice and guide implementation of strategic decisions.

The Associate Clinical Strategy Officer will serve on the Sacramento Health Campus and will report to the Chief Strategy Officer. The Strategy Office at UCDH is responsible for establishing and supporting enterprise strategy and growth opportunities and provides a range of services including planning, business evaluation, affiliate management, market analytics, project management, performance improvement and strategic facilitation.

Key Responsibility Areas of the Associate Clinical Strategy Officer Include:
• Providing guidance on strategic initiatives, including execution plans, and helping to socialize them throughout the UCDH physician community;
• Providing guidance on the development and implementation of strategy across UCDH, especially in relation to hospital and physician network growth, joint ventures, outreach initiatives and clinical enterprise business development;
• Serving as a UCDH representative when building relationships with external providers and developing tactics to increase market footprint;
• Developing approaches that strengthen UCDH clinical relationships to meet the needs of physicians and medical organizations in the marketplace;
• Participating in and advising on highly sensitive or complex negotiations, strategic relationships, and joint ventures;
• Recommending strategic initiatives based on forecast of local/regional healthcare market conditions;
• Serving as a liaison with the Medical Group and other stakeholders regarding strategic initiatives;
• Presenting on strategy to internal and external audiences ;
• Collaborating with physicians, leadership, and marketing to evaluate outreach materials and key messaging;
• Building relationships with physicians, clinics, and hospitals external to UCDH, including site visits as necessary
• Coaching and mentoring internal clinical partners;
• Collaborating with all leaders across all domains overseen by the Office of Strategy;
• Understanding and leveraging market, financial, quality and operational data to support strategic change management;
• Developing new opportunities for improving physician practice models, including opportunities in value based care, commercial care, and payor contracting;
• Analyzing problems / issues of diverse scope and determining solutions.

Qualifications
• M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. required
• Full Professor in an Academic Senate or Non-Senate series
• Board certification/eligible
• Medical licensure in the state of California
• Strong clinical skills in specialty area
• Experience with strategic planning, change management, business development, business intelligence, and process improvement

Preferred Qualifications
• Strong internal relationships and reputation with the clinical faculty.
• Creative problem-solving skills to assess opportunities and issues and develop solutions.
• Analytical skills to understand market and financial data/models.
• Excellent interpersonal communication, including relationship building skills and political acumen.
• Experience with physician practice operations, medical center operations, and health system's services.
• Attuned to health care industry trends with a legacy of experimentation.
• Ability to foster collegiality and work collaboratively in a diverse environment.
• Ability to adhere to University policies and procedures.
