About the role


  • 12 month Fixed Term opportunity
  • $106,710 - $120,233 + 9.5% Superannuation + Annual Leave Loading


The Assistant Manager, Financial Control provides high quality, complex accounting advice and support, in compliance with UNSW policies, procedures and processes, to ensure Finance is operating effectively and achieving both Group Financial Control and University objectives.


Specific responsibilities include:


  • Prepare and deliver complex financial services and reporting of Lease Agreements and Revenue Contracts to ensure data reported is accurate and deadlines are met
  • Collaborate with the Group Financial Control team to resolve technical accounting issues
  • Review and monitor significant transactions, balances, and cash-flows for the preparation and delivery of Group Financial Control requirements
  • Be the subject matter expert in relation to the interpretation and implementation of the accounting and regulatory standards by providing timely and effective advice regarding financial performance and operational issues
  • Liaise and build robust relationships with internal and external auditors providing clear guidance and support to enable auditors to achieve their requirements
  • Contribute to the design and development of Group Financial Control by identifying process improvement opportunities and participating in consultations to develop more effective and efficient ways of delivering key outcomes to promote a culture of continuous improvement being fostered and maintained
  • Maintain a broad, contemporary and substantial level of technical accounting knowledge and skills, including relevant legislation and regulatory requirements, to ensure Finance systems and processes are compliant with statutory standards.
  • Manage and drive the project support team members to ensure continuous development of capability to optimise staff engagement, motivation and productivity in providing the deliverables required.


About the successful applicant


To be successful in this role you will have:


  • Tertiary qualification in accounting (ACA, CPA, ACCA, CIMA)
  • CA or CPA Qualification with extensive relevant professional experience gained in a corporate finance environment.
  • Financial Accounting experience (5+ years), including delivery of statutory financial reporting and preparation of accounting position papers in accordance with relevant accounting standards
  • Demonstrated successful forward thinking and solution focused approach, as well as the ability to initiate and drive continuous process improvement
  • Superior communication skills to work collaboratively with senior customers, as well as the ability to succinctly and concisely explain complex issues effectively to non-accountants
  • Strong technical accounting skills and knowledge, including the interpretation and application of the latest relevant Australian Accounting Standards. This includes strong technical report writing and analysis skills
  • Self-motivated and proven ability to work independently as well as part of a team
