The Faculty of Science has a long history of building strong partnerships with our friends, alumni, donors and all levels of government, business and industry. An exceptional advancement program rests on a faculties ability to build and maintain lasting relationships with its donors, potential donors as well as researchers and faculty members. Reporting to the Assistant Dean Advancement for the Faculty of Science, the Assistant Director Advancement & Departmental Initiatives is accountable for initiating long-term partnerships and contributions of between $50K-5M from individual and corporate donors and community engagement events.

Duties:

Fundraising

Serve as the primary interface between individual and corporate donors for the purpose of philanthropic support.

  • Serve as fundraising support for departmental specific fundraising initiatives
  • Maintain and enhance strong, long-term relationships with a portfolio of 75-100 prospects
  • Personally make up to 150 visits to major gift prospects/donors annually to cultivate and solicit donations on behalf of the Faculty of Science
  • Track, document and communicate fundraising activity in the Advance database and share information with colleagues as appropriate
  • Support the activity of the Faculty of Science Advancement team by identifying potential major gift prospects and moving relationships as required

Inter-departmental coordination

Enhance and strengthen internal relationships through support and development of departmental and internal activities to support donor engagement and increasing philanthropic contributions to the University.

  • Working with Faculty of Science Advancement team identify faculty-based/departmental-specific fundraising priorities and effectively communicate across campus to Advancement colleagues and prospects/donors
  • Support annual giving strategies for the faculty driven by the Office of Advancement such as annual mailers and student calling program
  • Grow relationships with internal staff donors
  • Coordinate with communications to produce effective, departmental mailers and one-off fundraising pieces for the purposes of class/alumni/memorial gifts
  • Provide monthly donation lists to individual departments in a timely manner on a monthly basis
  • Serve as Development team lead for giving website management including content update, meeting with student groups and content support

Strategy Development

Plans, organizes and executes donor centered programs, including standardized and customized reporting to build and sustain effective lasting connections with donors.

  • Track donor engagement and stewardship activities within portfolio to enhance relationships and increase likelihood of further engagement and donations
  • Report regularly to the Assistant Dean Advancement on progress toward annual fundraising targets
  • Provide support to other frontline advancement staff when requested to help in preparation for travel and events for on donor engagement opportunities and aligning initiatives

Risk Management

Anticipate and create solutions to prevent or resolve issues, conflicts and risks affecting the relationships between the University and its donors, alumni and prospects with minimal negative impact.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to cultural diversity and the ability to work with individuals from a range of different cultural backgrounds
  • Addresses stakeholder needs in a positive, timely and efficient manner by involving the right people and resources at the right time
  • Assumes personal ownership of complications immediately and follows through until resolved

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; experience in the post-secondary setting is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated accomplishment in fostering productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to listen, apply critical thinking skills, and effectively communicate with a focus on stakeholder satisfaction
  • One to five years' experience in major gift fundraising with experience of closing gifts of up to $50,000, preferably in higher education, related experience in complex sales, financial services and business development would be considered
  • Demonstrated ability to be a contributing member of multi-disciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of a variety of fundraising tools and strategies and demonstrated experience with activities throughout the giving cycle, including identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of major gift donors in order to develop priorities relationships between them and the University of Alberta
  • Demonstrated project management, organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and juggle competing priorities in a high-paced environment
  • Occasional travel to visit donors and prospective donors is required

In accordance with the Temporary Administrative and Professional Staff (TAPS) Agreement, this position is an initial appointment of two years, with the possibility of renewal, and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits and annual salary range of$69,024 to $114,611.
