The University of California, San Diego, Warren College Writing Program (WCWP) is currently looking for a dynamic Assistant Director with a strong record of teaching excellence to begin in August, 2020. The Assistant Director will be responsible for leadership and teaching in a lively, growing, first-year writing program that focuses on the study of ethics, justice and society.

We are interested in a candidate that has a minimum of one-year of service in a leadership capacity in a a college or university setting. We are also interested in a scholar that has any combination of the following research and teaching interests: composition and rhetoric studies; writing program administration and assessment; anti-racist pedagogy; social justice rhetoric/writing.

Primary Duties

As an administrator, the Assistant Director’s primary duties include curricular development and pedagogical planning, as well as providing instructional support, guidance and mentoring of Teaching Assistants (TAs), and Non-Graduate Student Instructors. In association with the Director, the Assistant Director designs and reviews program and course learning outcomes and assessment methods. The Assistant Director facilitates weekly TA pedagogy meetings, and implements the Fall seminar and TA Orientation. In addition, the Assistant Director will be actively engaged in the recruitment of prospective TAs.

In the classroom, the Assistant Director will design and teach three sections of “Warren Writing 100” each year (one class per quarter). Warren Writing 100 is a course required for all Warren College transfer students.

This is a fiscal‐year (12‐month) appointment with eligibility of continued appointment per UC guidelines. The AC appointment is eligible for reappointment and merit every 2 years. The AC is appointed by the Dean of Undergraduate Education and reports to the Director of The Warren College Writing Program. The College Provost is the Department Chair.

Hiring Salary Range: $69,917-$73,342 (Salary commensurate with experience)

*Opportunities to teach in the summer may be available for additional compensation.

Required Qualifications:

• A Ph.D. or terminal graduate degree in Composition, Rhetoric, English, Literature or related field with knowledge of the pedagogy of writing and composition (degree must be conferred by July 1, 2020)
• Experience in curricular planning and development
• Knowledge of best‐practices, theories and pedagogies in the field of writing and composition or related fields
• Experience serving in a leadership capacity in an educational or related environment
• A record of distinguished teaching in composition or other writing programs at the college level
• Excellent organizational ability, including the ability to pursue and complete numerous projects at the same time
• Outstanding interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work well in a team‐oriented academic environment with colleagues representing many backgrounds and interests
• Work effectively with students representing diverse backgrounds, interests, and levels of preparation
• Demonstrated experience and commitment in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego’s commitment to achieving excellence and diversity in an academic setting. About the Program

The Warren College Writing Program represents one of seven undergraduate writing programs at UC San Diego. Associated with Earl Warren College, the program prepares students to succeed academically as undergraduate by teaching them to think critically, read analytically and communicate persuasively and effectively, both orally and in writing. The college’s namesake, former Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren, inspires course topics for the program. Students analyze contemporary and historical issues related to justice and ethics and use their analysis to compose a variety of writing projects for different purposes, and different audiences, using different rhetorical strategies.

The program offers WCWP 10A and 10B, which is a lower‐division, two‐course sequence required of all first‐year students. The program also offers WCWP 100, which is a mandatory, upper‐division course for all transfer students. Collectively, these courses satisfy the University of California writing requirements for undergraduates and ensure that Warren College students are able to construct evidence‐based written and oral arguments in preparation for their General Education and upper-division courses.
