About the role

Develop and deliver a strategic framework for the University of Melbourne collections to enhance research, exhibitions, and public engagement in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.


This is a highly collaborative role with strong liaison across multi functional teams including University of Melbourne collections managers, academic and professional staff.


As a member of the Science Gallery team the Head Strategic Collections is expected to support the Director Science Gallery and PVC Engagement to develop an ambitious new model for the development of the University of Melbourne cultural estate.

Some of the key responsibilities:

  1. Working in consultation with colleagues across the University to lead a planning process to deliver a vision and strategic plan to position University of Melbourne collections and Cultural Estate, within a global context.

  2. Working in consultation with colleagues across University of Melbourne, establish an operating framework for University of Melbourne collections, ensuring strong alignment with the University of Melbourne cultural venues.

  3. Work with external consultants to develop a business plan for future investment in the University of Melbourne collections.


Selection Criteria:


  • Qualifications and/or relevant experience in strategic collections management, museum studies or information management

  • Experience in establishing and delivering a strategic approach to collection management.

  • Extensive knowledge and proven experience of museum, library or university collection management systems and activities consistent with international museum standards

  • Ability to lead teams, inspire and build shared vision and manage change.

  • Sound budget and resource management skills, including project management and financial management.

  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, including valuation, collections audit, insurance and risk management.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong IT skills, analytical and decision making skills

  • Ability to advocate and influence at a high level.
