Modern scientific research requires modern IT facilities in terms of storage, computing and analysis capacity. Utrecht University is an innovator in this field and, over the next few years, much work will be done to provide researchers with optimal facilities. We are looking for a Research Data Applications Manager to join our team and help us build innovative facilities.


You are the conscience of our research data infrastructure and operate at the interface between technical and functional application management. The Research Data Applications Manager acts as a link between several different (management) Departments. The hardware and the operating system are managed by our infrastructure department but you can tell them exactly what you need.


You will also be responsible for the availability of our iRods platform, so you must be prepared to familiarise yourself fully with this technology. You will use this knowledge to support data managers in their work on a day-to-day basis and to ensure that faults are repaired.


In addition to this platform, we are developing a complex application (Yoda), which you will bring into production using Ansible tooling. Over the next few years, this system will undergo significant development, and you are expected to play an active (proactive) role in this.


Tasks and responsibilities


  • Managing the iRods application environment, which comprises of Linux, Apache and PostgreSQL, amongst others.
  • Expanding infrastructure scalability so extremely large datasets can be processed effectively.
  • Helping Data Managers manage the datasets on the platform.
  • Producing and updating documentation.
  • Assisting Functional Manager and Architect with complex issues and problems.
  • Scripting to enable the comprehensive automation of management.



The most important quality is enthusiasm and the ability to get to grips with new technologies quickly. On a personal level, you must be meticulous, you must have good communication skills and you must also be client focused. Due to the open culture within the organisation, you will often have direct contact with colleagues.


We also expect you to have the following knowledge and experience:

  • a minimum of a higher professional (hbo) degree or a similar level qualification;
  • a minimum of 3 years experience as a (Technical) Applications Manager;
  • knowledge of Linux and a related scripting language;
  • knowledge of databases or large datasets.


Ideally, you will also have:

  • a knowledge of iRods;
  • a knowledge of Ansible;
  • a knowledge of PostgreSQL;
  • a knowledge of GIT;
  • the ability to work independently but also be a team player;
  • good communication skills.


Proficiency in English is required. Proficiency in Dutch is not required, however you should have the intention to learn the language because you work with mostly Dutch speaking colleagues. So a basic understandig is very helpful.


We are offering a temporary position (1.0 FTE) for one year with the prospect of permanent employment subject to good performance. Depending on your qualifications and experience, your gross monthly salary will be a minimum of €2,640 and a maximum of €4,166 for full-time employment (scale 10 of the Collective Labour Agreement for the Dutch Universities). In addition, you will receive an attractive package of benefits, including 8% holiday pay and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
