Working under the guidance of the Director, and in consultation with stakeholders, the Biosafety Committee, and local Safety Committees, the Program Manager, EHRS participates in the development and implementation of research and laboratory programs for biosafety, laboratory safety, medical device and electrical certification, and laboratory user training. The incumbent implements initiatives under these program areas to manage and monitor the use, storage, handling, transport, and disposal of biohazardous materials. The Program Manager, EHRS acts as a resource to faculties and departments by: clarifying regulatory requirements; researching and communicating best practices, University policies, and protocols; monitoring regulatory developments and assessing them for potential impact; researching best practices; working with the Biological Safety Officer to implement the Biosafety and other laboratory safety programs; managing the biosafety permit and pathogen inventory database; developing, planning, and delivering safety training and communication strategies for research laboratory workers, handlers of infectious materials, and other laboratory staff; performing risk assessments; directing responses during emergencies; and conducting incident investigations and recommending corrective action.

 

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in Sciences, Occupational Safety, or a relevant field, and four years related experience including experience in biosafety and laboratory safety in a consulting, municipal, or educational setting or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Good knowledge of municipal, provincial, and federal environmental health and safety legislation (e.g., WorkSafe BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, Health Canada), and relevant biological and laboratory safety regulations and standards.
  • Ability to meet eligibility criteria for designation as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH), or Canadian Registered Safety Professional.
  • Ability to identify and address workers' concerns regarding perceived or actual workplace hazards.
  • Ability to prepare and present comprehensive plans and reports.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate training courses and programs.
  • Ability to demonstrate mature judgment, initiative, empathy, and tact.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, and presentation).
  • Excellent organizational, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong research and technical writing skills.
  • Proficient in the use of standard computer applications (e.g., word, spreadsheet, presentation, database).
  • Ability to arrange suitable transportation when travelling to other campuses and work locations.
