Position Overview

The Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Manager, Client Services and Outdoor Centre for approximately 18 months.

 

The University of Calgary’s Active Living department is one of the largest and most diverse recreation departments based on a North American campus. Active Living has a team of 40 full time and up to 600 part time staff. On an annual basis our staff handle 47,000 registrations in over 75 recreational and sporting activities, and provide facility access to over a million users to our facilities: North America's largest Outdoor Centre with climbing and bouldering walls, a gymnastics centre, an Olympic sized pool, a Fitness Centre with 200 m track, Canada's largest university Racquet Centre, five gymnasiums and access to the Olympic Oval. The Outdoor Centre also provides its students and community over 16,000 outdoor equipment rental orders each year.


Active Living provides all these services to the students, staff and community while charging one of the lowest recreation fees in North America. Our mission is 'To enrich lives by providing quality programming and educational experiences which promote and encourage lifelong active living for all.'

 

This position reports to the Director, Active Living and will manage and supervise the operations, staff and other resources required for Active Living's customer service operations.

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Manage the operation and development of client offerings for Active Living and the Outdoor Centre

  • Provide strategic direction for Client Services, the Outdoor Centre rental shop, the Fitness Centre desk and the Bowness Park rentals

  • Make recommendations to the Active Living Coordinators and Director regarding policy and processes to improve facility services and operations

  • Determine staffing requirements and responsible for hiring, scheduling, training, appraisal and discipline for 6 full-time staff and 60-100 hourly staff and students

  • Interpret and apply the AUPE collective agreement for the purposes of scheduling work, exceptions, payroll, time-off requests, sick days, acting incumbency and performance problems.

  • Possess a full comprehension of the Active Living software CSIS and be the team expert in order to assist with development projects and training for full-time staff

  • Work with the academic, athletic and service units within the Faculty of Kinesiology

  • Manage the Membership Coordinator in regards to facility memberships, maintenance concerns, client complaints and the Level Up program

 

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Five years of office administration and staff management experience

  • Significant outdoor gear knowledge and general knowledge in outdoor, indoor, and youth activities

  • Knowledge of university core business systems, PeopleSoft, CSIS is an asset

  • Good working knowledge of MS Office applications, particularly Excel & Word

  • Requires strong organizational and time management skills, accuracy, strong attention to detail and a well-developed procedural know-how

  • Requires strong interpersonal and communication skills such as diplomacy, punctuality, approachability, calmness during stressful times, the ability to focus and multi-task
