Position Overview

The Clinical Research Unit in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Clinical Research System Administrator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 2 years (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

 

The Clinical Research Unit in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary provides research and analytical data support services to faculty researchers and their collaborators.

 

This position reports to the Program Manager in the Clinical Research Unit.

 

There will be peak periods during the year that are stressful due to overlapping deadlines and shifting priorities. 

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • IT Process Management and Administrative

    • Responsible for elevating the level of proactive communication and thought process of the existing and future technological resources and needs
    • Define and maintain metrics and KPIs in the IT strategy to show progress against the IT strategy
    • Drive the business in adopting consistent practices while minimizing disruptions
    • Develop and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans, procedures, audits and other process improvement
    • Define, prioritize, allocate resources, track and provided status reporting of work assignments, projects
    • Budget and cost management for projects
    • Leads vendor selection process, and manages ongoing relationships and deliverables
    • Ensure IT application development process disciplines (solution delivery, project management, work request, QA, etc) and standards are established, effectively managed and performed
  • Communication and Collaboration

    • Ensure alignment of technology roadmaps with appropriate processes, skills and tools
    • Effectively manage key relationships with IT partners and suppliers and develop new ones as appropriate to maintain the required development capability to deliver CRU services
    • Work with stakeholders and users to survey and analyze the requirements for systems and processes to meet business needs
    • Manage multiple priorities with dynamic deadlines by having excellent priority setting skills and the initiative to undertake tasks to facilitate future efficiencies
  • Technical Knowledge and Ability

    • Monitor the performance of production systems, diagnose and solve detected performance problems
    • Help tune performance and ensure high availability of infrastructure
    • Help implementing control processes to prevent interruptions of services
    • Take part in the process of improvement of CRU system architecture and conception of new and innovative solutions for our production environments
    • Monitor backup operations and their availability
    • Maintain the documentation of infrastructure and systems configuration
    • Develop and maintain supporting utilities and applications to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of systems operation
    • Conduct performance monitoring and tuning, space management, quality assurance and disaster recovery planning to ensure the systems are secure and reliable
    • Must stay abreast of the latest technologies, best in industry standards, and solutions
  • Continuous Improvement and Knowledge Management

    • Contribute to CRU objectives of enhancing value brought to customers, service offerings, unit expertise and delivery process
    • Identify opportunities for enhancement and improvement of internal processes
    • Learn and become expert in all CRU services and platforms
  • Delivery/Support

    • Accountable for identifying needs, securing commitments and monitoring progress of deliverable from internal and external service providers
    • Accountable for ensuring technological solutions comply with architectural standards
       

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in computer science, computer engineering or IT related field

  • 7-10 years of experience in information systems

  • Extensive experience administering Linux servers (Red Hat, Ubuntu)

  • Ability to build and monitor services on production servers

  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining services such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Apache, Nginx, Courier

  • A solid understanding of networking (routing concepts, traffic shaping, reverse proxies, configuring and securing a network)

  • Strong knowledge of administering Cloud Based environment (AWS EC2, S3, RDS)

  • Strong knowledge of administering container services for production use (Docker, Kubernetes)

  • Strong knowledge of deploying and maintaining high availability solutions

  • Experience implementing and administering Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery strategies (multi-sites, failover & redundancy, backup processes)

  • Basic knowledge of authentication and identity management: LDAP, OAuth, Multi-Factor Authentication solution

  • Training in database administration (MySQL, PostgreSQL)

  • Advanced knowledge of scripting within a Linux environment (Bash, Python, Perl, Ruby, etc.)

  • Experience in software delivery across multiple technology platforms

  • Excellent overall knowledge of technology and technology trends

  • Excellent ability to provide practical strategic direction

  • Understanding of technical controls related to 21 CFR Part 11 compliancy

  • High degree of judgment, creativity, analytical, and problem solving skills

  • A good understanding of architectural concepts, methodologies and mapping approaches

  • Extensive experience of delivering to time, budget and quality in an IT delivery and/or development role

  • Experience in modern development/operations environments (Docker/Container Orchestration)

  • Experience with Agile Software development processes

  • Familiarity with modern web based development tools (GIT, UWSGI, Python, Django, MySQL)

  • Experience in database development and structure, especially in health related field

  • Experience in ethics rules and regulations and submissions

  • Experience in clinical research practice guidelines (i.e. Health Canada, FDA, ICH, GCP)

  • An understanding of University policy and procedures is considered an asset
