Under general direction of the Director, the incumbent will serve as the primary advisor providing information, support and advise students on Canadian immigration issues, including entry to Canada, study permit/visa applications various types of work permits including off campus and post graduate permits, permanent residence and citizenship, taxation issues for foreign nationals and advocate on their behalf when necessary. Provide accurate, timely and culturally appropriate assistance with immigrating to Canada, taxation and other related government regulations.


Advise refugees, domestic, and non-traditional special program international students, such as International Visiting Graduate Students Involved in Research, Visiting Undergraduate Students, inbound exchange students and new immigrant and ESL Students on complicated, non-routine immigration issues. Act as an advocate for these students as required.


Plan, deliver and coordinate workshops to assist new and continuing international students with all relevant government regulations and policies related to Citizenship and Immigration to Canada including but not limited to study permit, work permits, temporary residence, post graduate permits and the PR process. Develop and maintain the Centre’s essential immigration information for international students and ensure accurate and up to date immigration information for the Centre’s website and related publications. Responsible to maintain expertise in Citizenship and Immigration Canada updates, news, program and policies and website navigation and share or report within the department.


Plan and coordinate workshops to assist University of Toronto Scarborough students with applying for student visas and permits for study, temporary residence in Canada and work abroad opportunities.


Function as the University of Toronto Scarborough expert on immigration policies and regulations for international and domestic students. Liaise and collaborate with both internal and external partners to provide seamless and knowledgeable services and referral. Establishing an appropriate level of professionalism, developing partnerships both within and outside of the institution. Participate, collaborate and support programs and events within the Department of Student life as appropriate, which may include attendance after hours. Participate in discussion and information sharing of the national Student Advisory network (SACE) and related Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) activities or related immigration external professional associations.


(Minimum Qualifications)


University Degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Immigration Consultant Certificate (in good standing with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council) required or Lawyers and Paralegals in good standing with a provincial or territorial law society required.


Minimum of 5 years related experience working with international students at the post-secondary level. Experience in designing and conducting effective educational workshops. Experience in program development, implementation and evaluation. Overseas work/study experience required. Experience in managing the development of publications an asset. Experience as Designated Institutional Representative (DIR) an asset.


Superior and extensive knowledge of Canadian immigration law, policies and regulations as they relate to international students, their partners and families. Extensive knowledge of the various pathways for immigration to Canada. Knowledge of ROSI would be an asset. Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite) and knowledge of other technical resources for delivering quality services. High level of client service.


Must possess excellent interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills. Must be able to demonstrate cross-cultural awareness, sound judgment, and a high level of initiative. Must have strong organizational skills and be able to multi-task. Excellent knowledge of international students related resources. Demonstrated ability to work as a team player, commitment to student success and the capacity to handle a busy workload. Extensive knowledge of existing and developing virtual communication methods, e.g. Skype, twitter. Knowledge of virtual teaching platforms, e.g. Webinar.

Schedule: Full-time

Pay Scale Group and Hiring Rate: USW Pay Band 13 -- $71,537 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $91,485. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
