About Advancement

In Advancement, we aim to facilitate the establishment and maintenance of mutually beneficial relationships between the University and its alumni, friends and benefactors. The Advancement Office is responsible for the management of programs relating to alumni and benefactors, and provides services to and works collaboratively with faculties and other central administration areas.

 

University of Melbourne Advancement (UoMA) is responsible for the coordination and delivery of Believe: the Campaign for the University of Melbourne, www.campaign.unimelb.edu.au 

 

The completion of the first phase goal of raising $500M for the Believe Campaign was publicly announced in March 2016 along with the intention to proceed with a second phase of the Campaign with revised goals of raising $1B and actively engaging with 100,000 alumni by the end of 2021. The Campaign is the largest initiative of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region.

About the role

 

Science Gallery Melbourne (SGM) is an exciting new initiative of the University of Melbourne.  It will be located in the heart of the University’s innovation precinct (Melbourne Connect Initiative).

 

As Development Manager for SGM, you will work alongside the Director of SGM to execute the SGM fund development strategy and campaign and activate industry relationships where they intersect with SGM and the Melbourne Connect Initiative Super Floor. The aim is two-fold: to secure SGM financially and to activate the innovation precinct. You will work hand in glove with SGM’s Director to deliver on fundraising strategy.

 

In this role, you will have three major areas of responsibility. You will:

  1. Actively manage a portfolio of prospective and current donors and sponsors for SGM and the Melbourne Connect Initiative Super Floor;

  2. Coordinate industry strategy with the Directors of Divisional Advancement (STEM and HASS) where portfolios intersect with the Melbourne Connect Initiative’s innovation program; and

  3. Manage donor relations and activate sponsorship agreements on behalf of SGM and the Melbourne Connect Initiative Super Floor.

 

You will focus on both donor and sponsor acquisition ($10,000 to $500,000) and activating innovation precinct relationships. You will also play a supporting and referral role in relation to agreements of $500,00 and above and/or which are led by the academic divisions. Donor relations and stakeholder engagement focuses on bespoke engagement for current and prospective donors and sponsors, generally in the form of events.

 

You will have outstanding interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively in a complex environment. You will be able to engage effectively in a fast-paced, goal-orientated environment and forge effective relationships with a broad range of professional staff, donors, and volunteers. You will also demonstrate outstanding research and written skills that enable you to produce a wide range of written materials.

 

About you

  • A tertiary qualification and experience in a fundraising / sponsorship marketing environment; or an equivalent combination of relevant training/education and experience.

  • A proven track record of success in negotiating philanthropic gifts, grants and / or industry sponsorships ranging from $10,000 to $500,000.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • An engaging, collaborative style suited to working constructively with key partners in the University and among the University’s external communities.

  • Discretion and reliability for confidentiality in the conduct of alumni and donor relations.

  • Ability to plan and organise self and others.

  • High level of technical competence or capacity in MS Office and Advancement software & databases.
