The Department of Medicine is the largest and most complex department in the School of Medicine, with 3500+ faculty and staff and 13 subspecialty Divisions: Allergy and Infectious Diseases; Cardiology; Dermatology; Gastroenterology; General Internal Medicine; Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine; Hematology; Medical Genetics; Metabolism; Endocrinology; and Nutrition; Nephrology; Oncology; Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine; and Rheumatology.


The department encompasses units located at multiple sites including University of Washington, Harborview Medical Center, VA Puget Sound Health Care Services, Bloodworks Northwest, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and other outside institutions.


The Department of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Web Manager to provide web services to the Department of Medicine including the main public site, intranet, 13 subspecialty divisions and multiple research centers. This individual will:


  • Establish goals, objectives and strategies for web-related projects 
  • Develop, test, maintain and manage a Drupal 7 CMS multisite installation to host public-facing websites for the department and its divisions, research and educational groups. Prepare for migration to Drupal 8 within next two years. 
  • Provide website creation and consultation services to divisions and research centers within the department. Advise and assist stakeholders throughout the design process regarding information architecture, writing content for the web, usability and accessibility. 
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to identify and develop new features, tools and designs that embrace best standards and practices 
  • Create and provide in-person training sessions and didactic documentation regarding use of the content management system 
  • Research and recommend continuing strategies for improving web management within the department. Develop a plan for offering broader web services to department divisions, such as intranet solutions, as well as support for an expanded group of clients, such as research, clinical groups and external departments. 
  • Collaborate with department IT staff regarding server configuration and management



  • The Web Manager will supervise 1.0 FTE Web Developer/UX Designer.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, and 4-5 years of progressively responsible web developer and/or lead programmer experience in an IT environment.


Additional Requirements:

  • Experience using HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, JSON on a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). 
  • Experience with any of the following; Git, SASS/LESS, RESTful web services. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and exceptional decision-making skills. 
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including team ethic and relationship building. 
  • Development experience with Drupal 7 and/or Drupal 8, including site administration, front-end and back-end development. 
  • Demonstrated expertise in building web sites or web-based applications. 
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to respond appropriately to deadline pressures.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.



  • Demonstrated expertise or education in organizing and writing content for the web, and ability to coach content editors. 
  • Demonstrated expertise or education in user interface design, interaction design, and/or information design. 
  • Experience with graphic design for the web, including familiarity with graphics software such as Photoshop and Illustrator. 
  • Knowledge of IT accessibility issues for users with disabilities; familiarity with accessibility standards and best practices; experience testing for accessibility; and demonstrated ability to design content/applications with accessibility considerations. 
  • Experience working in higher education or a large research institution.
