If so, our immediate opening for the Assistant Director for Biosciences Diversity Programs role may be a great fit for you! Reporting to the Director of Curriculum and Programs, the Assistant Director of Biosciences Diversity Programs (Student Services Officer 2) will provide support for academic programs and management of recruitment focused diversity initiatives within the Office of Graduate Education. The position will serve as the primary lead for the Stanford Summer Research Program (SSRP) — an intensive undergraduate summer research program for students from underrepresented backgrounds.


The Office of Graduate Education (OGE) aims to help train and empower the next generation of leaders and innovators within and beyond academia and industry. Our graduate students are the central drivers and conductors of some of the most transformative research in the world. Our office offers programs and services to support graduate students and sustain the level of excellence achieved by the Stanford Biosciences.  


*This position is not scheduled to move to Stanford Redwood City


Duties include:

  • Manage all aspects of the Stanford Summer Research Program (SSRP), including the review of ~1000 applications, making mentor matches with faculty, developing and implementing programming, managing graduate student staff, writing funding grants, and tracking participation and outcomes
  • Develop, implement and assess programming and initiatives that increase the recruitment and retention of students from diverse backgrounds including the application fee waiver selection process and recruitment database. 
  • Work with offices across Stanford University to create and cultivate a comprehensive and ongoing supportive academic research environment for students from diverse backgrounds
  • Manage the travel schedule and planning for Bioscience recruitment attendance at national conferences, college and university visits for staff, faculty, and students. 
  • Manage on-campus outreach efforts (faculty talks, student panels, lab tours, etc) for prospective students of diverse backgrounds.
  • Collaborate with others to help resolve program issues and concerns, interpret policies, and mediate complex and sensitive issues.
  • Resolve multi-dimensional matters in response to students in crisis, at risk, or who have other program issues, counsel students and parents on sensitive and confidential issues.
  • Reconcile complex issues; analyze diverse transactions from multiple sources.
  • Summarize data from multiple sources, prepare management reports and presentations.
  • Identify and evaluate data needs, manage the implementation and development of technology.
  • Provide advice to students on a range of issues, including, but not limited to, academic progress, academic program policies, career plans, accessibility, community standards, etc., in order to assist them in making appropriate choices and decisions.
  • May oversee, analyze and assist in financial processes and development of budgets.

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field
  • Previous experience in program coordination, student services or related field
  • Professional/working experience in an academic environment/university setting
  • Science background/writing experience




Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.




  • Good judgment and the ability to keep sensitive information confidential. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in order to clearly and effectively communicate with internal and external audiences, students, staff and faculty.
  • Ability to bring a student-centered approach to the work and be sensitive to issues faced by a diverse student population.
  • Ability to analyze the needs of individual students and groups of students, and to be or become knowledgeable about the range of University resources available to students. 
  • Prior experience with and ability to plan and organize events ranging from small to large scale. Ideally concerning diversity, cultural competence or related topics.
  • Ability to be flexible, deal with ambiguity and change, and work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and complete numerous projects efficiently, effectively and on deadline. 
  • Advanced analysis and problem solving skills.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced customer service skills.
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
  • Understanding of financial transactions.
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
