Description:

Under the direction of the Director, Utilities Sustainability and Grounds, the Manager, Mechanical Operations (Manager) is responsible for managing the Utilities unit within the Facility Management & Planning Department, including managing and overseeing the work of building operating engineers. The Manager ensures the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all associated equipment and services in all buildings at the University of Toronto Mississauga. The Manager works closely with faculty and staff concerning maintenance, operational and financial issues, establishes schedules and ensures completion of repairs, upgrades and renovations within budget and with as little disruption as possible of academic programs.



The Manager provides expert technical advice to others, actively pursues energy conservation opportunities and manages the section budget. The incumbent manages numerous renewal projects and provides input into major capital construction projects as a prime member of the operations team. The incumbent will also be responsible for ensuring efficient building energy usage, identifying anomalies from operating benchmarks, effectively analyzing energy data relating to the daily operations and applying strategic measures to improve building operational efficiencies.



Qualifications:

Education:
1st Class or 2nd Class* Operating Engineer TSSA Certificate of Qualification and a degree in Engineering (Mechanical preferred). Professional Engineering designation is an asset.



Experience:
Seven years of experience in building, power plant, workshop equipment maintenance/management, including four years of supervisory and/or leadership experience. Excellent knowledge of heating and ventilation, refrigeration and air conditioning systems in a variety of buildings. Experience managing projects independently.



Skills:
High calibre trades ability with quality service experience. Excellent organizational skills. Good analytical and problem solving skills. Ability to handle operation and maintenance equipment. Proficiency in use of standard office software applications: Word, Excel. Ability to use SAP, AMS, FIS, U of T budget reporting etc. Excellent leadership and management skills.



Other:
Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; good interpersonal skills; strong service orientation; initiative, tact, good judgment; ability to multitask. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet multiple demands. Experience providing professional, technical advice to others.
