Vice President - International National University of Ireland NUI Galway Ireland

Vice President: International

The post of Vice-President: International is a new and exciting opportunity in NUI Galway. Reporting to the President, the Vice- President: International will be a member of the University Management Team (UMT) with responsibility for advancing the international strategy of the university.

In our current strategy Vision 2020, we aim to

  • achieve a reputation as one of the world’s top-tier universities, with relationships of substance that span the globe,
  • educate students who are globally conscientious and internationally engaged, and who excel as scholars, citizens and global leaders and
  • recruit and retain people who are internationally renowned in their fields and embedded in international networks of scholarship.

The impact of these developments is that NUI Galway will be recognised as meeting its responsibilities: not only the responsibility of pursuing ethical international activities, but also the goal of making lasting contributions to the betterment of people’s lives across the world.

Our international strategy is ambitious and is inspired by our location in Galway, a diverse city with a tradition of reaching out to the world. It encompasses the experiences of students and staff, and emphasises both our international reputation and responsibilities, displaying awareness of how the world sees Galway – but also being mindful of how Galway sees the world.

As we develop our new strategy for the period beyond 2020, this emphasis on our international reputation and reach will gather pace. The new Vice-President: International will have the opportunity to play a central role in the envisioning and implementation of that strategy.

The ideal candidate will be a graduate, with a higher degree and will have

  • a demonstrable understanding of and commitment to the role of the university in an international setting
  • broad experience of and commitment to leading international engagement in its widest sense including in areas such as student recruitment, research engagement and institutional partnerships
  • an appreciation and understanding of the student experience, cultural diversity and a strong intercultural competence
  • leadership qualities and vision which give credibility with internal and external stakeholders in research, in teaching and in the university’s contribution to society
  • experience of building and managing effective academic and administrative teams
  • relevant professional experience and a strong network of relationships at senior level in the national and/or international community
  • excellent interpersonal and negotiating skills, including strong communication and motivational skills in the management of both internal and external relationships
  • an ability to relate to individual members of faculty and staff in a collegial way and work collegially as part of a team.

It is also desirable that the candidate is an academic of Professorial standing, has experience of studying or working in foreign cultures and an interest in and experience of diversity in language and culture.

The post will be for a period of five years initially with a commitment to the post-holder to move to an appropriate post on completion of contract.
