The team

The Marketing and Communications team works to develop communications and marketing strategies/plans and outreach activities to staff and students across the University, as well as managing communications and engagement internally across our various IT teams. We work to support and promote the University’s IT services and projects, in support of the University’s strategic plan – Manchester 2020.


The role

The Marketing and Communications Officer (Digital Marketing Lead) will drive digital marketing for IT across the University. Internally - ensuring the right tone of voice, visuals and messaging to support the delivery of our services internally to the University’s 12,000 staff and 40,000 students. Externally - leveraging key service provisions in support of student recruitment and building links with leading technology experts and influencers.


Always customer-focussed, the post holder will have excellent digital communications and marketing knowledge and a passion for creating innovative, effective content. This role is to cover the current post holder being engaged on another project and is open to both internal and external candidates, including existing University employees seeking an appropriate secondment opportunity. Working with IT Services colleagues and wider communications and marketing teams across the University, the role will involve:


• Managing IT Services’ digital channels including web and social media; co-ordinating digital content projects and managing our social media and web content strategies


• Developing content plans to support the online customer journey – making online information about our services accessible, engaging and informative


• Producing high quality digital content to support IT Services’ campaigns and objectives


• Regularly reviewing the effectiveness of content and use of our digital channels; using data to develop channel evaluation reports and inform/support decision-making


• Scanning the Higher Education and technological markets to identify new opportunities


If you think this role could be for you, the key skills we are looking for that you should address within your application are:


• Proven experience in digital marketing and leading on digital strategy development

• Experience of monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of digital marketing

• Experience in planning and leading digital marketing projects

• Ability to proactively lead in own area of expertise (digital marketing) with the confidence to challenge, to bring new ways of thinking

• Proven stakeholder management skills - working across a diverse range of stakeholders, with the ability to influence

• An up to date knowledge of the communications and marketing industry and a genuine interest in exploring new technologies

• A thorough understanding of design principles and experience of developing digital content

• An eye for detail, creative outlook and experience with digital design software

• Substantial experience in online copywriting and editing

• Experience in using digital marketing and social media tools


An understanding of the Higher Education and/or technology sectors and their current marketing environment would be advantageous.
