College Teaching Officer in Law University of Cambridge, Lucy Cavendish College United Kingdom

College Teaching Officer in Law

Applications are invited from suitably qualified women* for the post of College Teaching Officer (CTO) in Law at Lucy Cavendish College. The post will begin on 1st September 2018 and is tenable for three years in the first instance.

Lucy Cavendish College is a strong and diverse intellectual community uniquely for women over 21. Part of the collegiate University of Cambridge, the College was founded in 1965 and currently has 34 Fellows and 6 Research Fellows; an expanding student body of approximately 390, a third of whom are mature undergraduates, the other two thirds graduate students; and 35 FTE members of staff.

The CTO will be expected to undertake 12 hours teaching a week for the College (or an equivalent number of hours within the Faculty of Law) and to assume the role of Director of Studies for Law. Students attend lectures within the Faculty of Law and have small group teaching (supervisions) within the College to consolidate their knowledge and to prepare for University examinations. The College is seeking a specialist in any field, including medical law, but with the expectation that the appointed woman would be able to supervise one of the first year papers (Tort, Criminal law or Constitutional law) and a second foundation subject (Contract, Equity, EU or Land law).

Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds; many already have a first degree in another subject and complete their BA studies in two years instead of the normal three years. Some have come from other successful careers and some may carer responsibilities but all have to reach the same standard at the end of the two or three years of their undergraduate course. The appointee will therefore need to have a flexible approach to their teaching to be able to adjust to the widely differing backgrounds of the students on admission. It is expected that the post holder will be at an early stage of her academic career and would be research active. The post holder will also be elected as a Fellow and Trustee of the College, be expected to attend College committees and participate in College life.
