Cornell Athletics and Physical Education is seeking a full-time Manager of the John T. Oxley Equestrian Center to join their staff. Duties include overall management of the business, administrative, daily operations and activities of the Oxley Equestrian Center and its staff. Oxley is the center for Cornell’s polo teams, Equestrian Team, and boarders. The facility houses 70 horses and includes indoor and outdoor arenas and turnout paddocks.

 

This position is also responsible for the development and monitoring of the facility budget, by exercising control over expenditures and developing revenue. The position includes advertising, interviewing, hiring, training and supervision of facility maintenance and animal care staff; all animal care activities, compliance with animal welfare organizations, and building and occupational safety codes, contracting with outside groups to rent arena time and implementing risk management measures. This position will be required to work directly with the governing body to ensure best practices are met. Duties include working closely with team coaches to coordinate their program needs in a fair manner; formulating policies and rules pertaining to the optimum functioning and management of the facility and its programs; planning, implementing and coordinating capital projects; and overseeing the administration and daily operations of a 20-horse boarding facility. The position involves working with prospective and current donors of equipment and horses and completing the appropriate paperwork to Advancement Services. Be knowledgeable concerning IRS regulations pertaining to donations. The manager represents Cornell to prospective and current students and their parents. Meets monthly with Associate Director of Athletics to review activities but works under no daily supervision.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, with a preference for Animal Science or Equine Studies, with 7-10 years previous working in an environment containing over 20 horses, in the hunter/jumper sport where riding  instruction, training, sales and boarding take place.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience supervising both full-time, part-time staff and volunteers in a variety of equine related roles
  • General computing skills, such as word processing, spreadsheets, electronic mail, and internet based applications.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Experience with budgeting and oversight of facility finances.
  • Must be American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Certified.
  • Competitive level riding experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in equine business management.
  • Experience managing a boarding operation of 20 or more horses
  • Familiarity with the sport of polo.

 

Working Environment

 

Individual must be able to lift and or move at least 50 lb bags of grain and hay. Individual must be capable of assisting with the unloading and stacking of hay at least once a week, which involves carrying and lifting overhead 50 lb bales for ½ hour to an hour. Must be able to meet the physical demands of horse care and work with barn crew cleaning stalls, sweeping, shoveling sawdust, hauling hoses, and pushing wheelbarrows. The manager should be comfortable with using simple power tools like a drill, hammers, and power saw for doing simple carpentry repairs if the maintenance man is not available. Must be familiar with common veterinary procedures used in horse care such as taking rectal temperature, finding pulse, giving injections. Exposure to blood is common with this position. Must have the ability to operate a farm tractor and other farm machinery. Work is frequently outdoors in cold, inclement weather, or hot humid weather. Works in a facility that is dusty, often dirty and smells like a barn. Horses can be extremely unpredictable and stubborn. There is always the possibility of being kicked, bitten, pinned by a horse at any time without warning. Injuries are highly likely in this position.
