Description:


The Chief Administrative Officer is responsible for the overall business administration of the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). The incumbent establishes strategic direction and vision for the University of Toronto Mississauga in consultation with the Vice-President & Principal, the Vice-Principal Academic & Dean, and other senior members of the UTM administration and based upon knowledge of university goals and objectives. Reporting directly to the Vice-President & Principal, the CAO provides leadership through direct participation in the overall operational management of UTM’s administrative and technical functions, including business, planning, finance, human resources, facilities management and planning, capital construction, governance, information and instructional technology, police services, health and safety, hospitality, retail, and conference services. As a member of the Vice-President & Principal’s senior management team and as the senior non-academic executive at UTM, the incumbent participates in and contributes to the attainment of the broader goals of both the campus and the broader institution and fosters positive relationships with senior university academics, administrative and union officials, the neighboring community, the City of Mississauga, and the Region of Peel. The CAO contributes to the achievement of UTM’s academic mission as a member of the senior management team by building consensus for the Vice-President & Principal’s agenda, providing proactive support for a wide array of academic, administrative and leadership functions, assisting in UTM’s strategic long-term budget, staff complement, capital and development plans, resource allocation and policy development. The CAO represents UTM through serving on University boards, committees, task forces and working groups and plays a vital role in critical inter-divisional communications throughout the university.



The University of Toronto Mississauga, (UTM), one of three campuses of the University of Toronto, offers a unique teaching, research and physical environment. Located on about 250 acres along the Credit River, UTM is an integral part of the City of Mississauga, partnering with community and business leaders to enrich academic programs and campus initiatives. UTM has recently undergone unprecedented expansion to enhance the quality and quantity of the teaching experience, research and student space. Enrolment has more than doubled, from about 5,500 in 2003 to more than 14,000 in 2017. This expansion, combined with UTM’s legacy of learning and record of achievement, offers a dynamic opportunity for a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) associated with the growth and development of the campus.



Qualifications:


EDUCATION:

 

University degree (Master’s level preferred) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


EXPERIENCE:

 

Significant senior management experience preferably in higher education or the public sector. Demonstrated success in providing sound strategic advice and leading complex, change-management initiatives. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage people, resources and space.

 

SKILLS:

 

Ability to develop effective working relationships with various senior managers, constituent groups. Exemplary leadership skills; effective negotiator; superior communication, interpersonal and multi-tasking skills. Demonstrated strategic conceptualization, analytical and planning skills. Knowledge of current trends as they relate to the responsibilities of the role.


OTHER:

Sensitivity to diversity; political astuteness; results oriented; approachable and collaborative management style; comfort working within a consultative and consensus oriented environment. Ability to retain a calm, tactical focus during critical incidents.
