Vacancy number 21-178

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) is looking for an Advisor Research Funding (grant advisor) to help researchers apply for research funding, with a focus on (EU and National) consortium applications for Social Sciences and Humanities.

UvA aims to create societal and economic value from education and research. Innovation Exchange Amsterdam (IXA), a central UvA-department, actively supports researchers in applying for research funding, valorisation activities and in setting up consortia and cooperation. IXA UvA-HvA has a team of 30 enthusiastic and motivated people. IXA UvA-HvA is organized in four teams of different expertise: research funding, business development, legal support and event- and management support. The grant support team advises and supports researchers in applying for research funding.

What are you going to do

The grant advisor will work in a team of ten grant advisors. With colleagues, the grant advisor is responsible for stimulating researchers to apply for funding and for finding suitable funding opportunities for (excellent) scientists, in different stages of their research career.

The grant advisor supports researchers in the full process of grant applications (pre-award), from identifying a suitable program and call, to advising on the structure of the application and commenting on draft versions of the grant application. Other tasks are to proactively inform researchers and research units on opportunities and to organize and coordinate information sessions about funding schemes and procedures. The grant advisor also gives training and workshops and organizes and coordinates interview training. The grant advisor coordinates his/her activities with for example the project offices and/or research institute management. Finally, the grant advisor works together with the other IXA experts. The grant advisor has no post-award tasks.

The UvA is known for its high-quality research in many disciplines. The UvA focuses on the opportunities of young and talented researchers and on multi- and interdisciplinary research, for which the UvA cooperates with national and international partners. In line with this focus, the grant support team advises on both individual and – increasingly - consortium grants. The latter are for example applications in the Dutch National Research Agenda (Dutch: nationale wetenschapsagenda) or the EU Horizon programs.

The new grant advisor will mainly, but not exclusively, focus on supporting UvA-researchers in applying for funding for (EU and National) consortium projects. The advisor will work in the SSH-domain, in 4 UvA-Faculties (Humanities, Law, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Economics and Business), for a significant part in the Faculty of Humanities. The advisor will work from the IXA central office and in the Faculties. In the Faculty of Humanities, the advisor will be embedded in the grant support team.

What do we require

If you are the advisor research funding we are looking for, you:

  • hold at least an academic degree, preferably a PhD, in the SSH domain;
  • have affinity with research;
  • have at least 3 years of relevant work experience in a similar position;
  • have proven knowledge and experience in supporting and advising researchers in all aspects of research grant applications in general and specifically in (EU and National) consortium applications, preferably in the humanities and/or SSH broadly;
  • are service-oriented and an efficient communicator;
  • are able to handle multiple projects at once on a tight deadline;
  • have excellent oral and written communication skills, in Dutch and English.

In addition, you are proactive, independent and show initiative. You have a result-oriented, flexible and professional attitude and you are a team player.
