Advancement Officer (COM2C)


Position Summary: 

Reporting to the Managing Director of Development in the Desautels Faculty of Management, the Advancement Officer will manage all Desautels VIP alumni networks and international events in relation to the Faculty's alumni engagement and prospect pipeline strategy.  The incumbent will drive and manage the implementation of the engagement strategy, a portfolio of over 200 top donors, volunteers, and prospects world-wide.  The incumbent will organize engagement activities for these top-level volunteer programs to generate maximum benefit for the Faculty's mission.  As well, s/he will oversee the implementation of short and long-term plans related to development, alumni relations, and the Dean's travel to maximize top-level engagement with the Faculty and the University, and its established alumni relations programs including the Faculty Advisory Board and the Global Expert Panels.  


Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Formulate strategy for the VIP alumni networks by making recommendations on new organizational processes and implementing the alumni engagement plans.
  • Manage, grow, maximize and improve the Desautels Global Expert Panel Program;  ensure that this engagement program is integrated with the overall development strategy for the Faculty.
  • Liaise with all expert panels members at least bi-annually and manage all communications such as newsletters and relevant meetings; oversee the individual guest lectures and campus visits by panel members.
  • Monitor and report to the Managing Director and DAR team on the level of engagement and annual or campaign giving by expert panel members annually, so as to maximize the support and involvement of each member and the overall impact of the expert panel program.
  • Act as liaison between the Managing Director (and the Development team more broadly) with faculty and with Career Services (including other McGill and Faculty units).
  • Oversee visits to the Faculty by VIP alumni and friends, such as potential donors, parents, etc.
  • Ensure that the Faculty derives maximum benefit from the Faculty Advisory Board (FAB) and that there is integration between the Expert Panel program and FAB.
  • Produce reports, make recommendations and proposals.


Minimum Education & Experience: 

Undergraduate degree

Three (3) years' related experience


Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities: 

Demonstrated understanding of alumni relations and its importance to the development process. Results-driven, highly motivated self-starter with a demonstrated ability to build constructive and effective relationships. Client-focused, with strong listening, planning, organizational, priority setting, analytical and problem-solving skills. Proven ability to manage multiple files within tightly prescribed timetables. Strong project leadership, project management and execution skills. Capacity to work well with a senior governance group. Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team in a complex, changing, fast-paced environment. Excellent interpersonal skills with strong presentation and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work in a PC environment, using MS Office, and client-server database software. English, spoken and written; French, spoken.
