Catholic University of Leuven Kulak

EPNOE (European Polysaccharide Network of Excellence) is a research, education and knowledge transfer network connecting Companies, Academic and Research Institutions working or interested in polysaccharides. It was established owing to the help of the European Commission. The EPNOE's main missions are : 1) to offer a networking platform enabling close interactions between members in order to favour innovation, boost knowledge transfer and organise R&D activities in a totally confidential manner; 2) to organise basic and applied research for the study of fundamental concepts, the testing of new ideas and the development of new products based on or containing polysaccharides; 3) to organise education in polysaccharide science at the level of continuing education for companies and of post-graduate students and post-docs. EPNOE is managed at the Department of Chemical Engineering at KU Leuven. The department aims to provide a balance between creative fundamental and applied research in selected topics of chemical engineering, while at the same time maintaining the necessary core competences in its faculty to ensure the education of chemical engineering master and PhD students. Given the prevalence and economical importance of the chemical process industry in Belgium, and especially in the Antwerp harbour, the societal role of the department in the education and training of chemical engineers (MSc Eng and PhD) is very important. At the same time, chemical engineering research is being performed which aims to be pushing the boundaries of our discipline. The department has decided to focus on high quality research in a selected number of areas, with at each time sufficient critical mass being gathered around relevant topics
