Position description

The College of Letters and Sciences, along with the Institute for Social Behavioral and Economic Research, at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for an Academic Coordinator I position. This is a full-time, calendar-year position. The initial appointment will be through June 30, 2023.

Directors of the Centers representing the Middle East, East Asia, and Latin America, are seeking an Academic Coordinator to take on responsibilities tied to the daily running of the centers, as well as administratively prepare, develop, and implement a range of events, including scholarly talks, workshops, and conferences, as well as community-facing activities. The position also includes coordinating \ writing extramural or intramural research grants, and managing grant implementation. Finally, the Academic Coordinator serves as primary administrator for an Institute initiative, which develops shared projects among these three Centers, as well as with the Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Daily administrative support for each Center.
  • Planning, advertising, graphics, logistics, and administration for approximately fifty sponsored events and two to four small conferences.
  • Facilitating Center-related community-facing events and projects.
  • Coordinating and sometimes leading the writing of extramural and intramural research grants.
  • Managing grant implementation when grants are awarded.
  • Writing grant reports and managing the logistics of travel, reimbursement, and hiring of research assistants and consultants related to research grants.
  • Overseeing communications, announcements, and publicity to affiliated faculty members, graduate students, alumni, and majorst.
  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of the AreaGlobal Institute Initiative.
  • Maintaining and updating Center websites and social media.
  • Overseeing Center interns.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Completion of all requirements for an MA (or equivalent terminal degree) at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Degree or experience in an area studies or related discipline
  • At least one year of administrative experience
  • Completed or near-completed Ph.D.
  • Grant writing experience
  • Proficiency in languages other than English
