Description

Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) and California Sea Grant at UC San Diego seek a motivated individual to coordinate the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) program under the guidance of the CalCOFI Director and CalCOFI Committee, in partnership with California Sea Grant. CalCOFI is among the world’s preeminent time series programs and has been sampling physical and biological components of the eastern Pacific ocean continuously since 1949 CalCOFI remains a unique partnership among the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and SIO.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in ocean sciences or related field.

Strengths in biological oceanography, fisheries science and advanced data analyses are preferred. Strengths in organization and personal communication are essential. In consultation with the CalCOFI Director, Committee and California Sea Grant, the successful candidate will work to organize and strengthen CalCOFI’s state, federal and academic connections, and will facilitate new programmatic elements that strengthen the connections between data and constituents. As part of this effort, the successful candidate will organize annual scientific meetings, and twice-annual meetings of the CalCOFI Scientific Advisory Board.

Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform regular outreach with the organizations that represent ocean constituents (e.g., recreational fisheries, commercial fisheries, non-consumptive recreation, non-governmental organizations)
  • Develop, organize and implement cooperative fisheries science and/or citizen science programs that complement and enhance the CalCOFI dataset.
  • Develop and implement materials and outreach activities that promote CalCOFI data and products, and raise awareness of CalCOFI with the general public, in collaboration with CASG extension and communications professionals.
  • Maintain a “living document” of CalCOFI activities and accomplishments that will serve as the basis for annual reporting to funding agencies, and coordinate on reporting activities for CASG and NOAA.
  • Coordinate a CalCOFI Scientific Advisory Board, consisting of representatives from State and Federal government, academia, and commercial and recreational fisheries.
  • Coordinate two meetings per year of the CalCOFI Committee (CalCOFI leadership from SIO, SWFSC, CDFW).
  • Develop, curate and disseminate minutes of meetings of the CalCOFI Committee and the Scientific Advisory Board to inform subsequent efforts.
  • Oversee the CalCOFI conferences, including coordinating venues, conference and schedules and any associated activities.
  • Coordinate periodic special-issue publications associated with CalCOFI conferences.
  • Annually, solicit authors for the State of the California Current report/publication and seek new methods of publication.
  • Work with the SIO development office to pursue funding opportunities for CalCOFI conferences.
  • Work with the CalCOFI director and committee, in partnership with California Sea Grant, to develop field plans, budgets and text for proposals associated with both novel and recurring funding.
  • Pursue and explore opportunities that expand the financial support and scientific impact of CalCOFI observations.
  • Serve as part of the California Sea Grant extension team, a statewide network of scientists who develop solutions to high-priority coastal and marine issues by applying knowledge and understanding gained through research conducted by themselves and/or others.
  • Participate in monthly CASG Extension staff meetings.
  • Submit monthly and annual progress reports to CASG.

SIO is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for ocean, earth, and atmospheric science research, education, and public service with approximately 200 principal investigators leading research programs on all aspects of earth, ocean and atmospheric sciences.

NOAA’s California Sea Grant College Program funds and conducts marine research, education and outreach throughout California.

Salary: Salary is competitive and is based upon UCSD pay scales, commensurate with a candidate's experience, but is expected to start at $69,917 annually. Performance reviews, merit increases and promotions will follow UCSD guidelines for the Academic Coordinator series.
