Description

The Art, Design and Architecture Museum at UC Santa Barbara seeks an Academic Coordinator I. Reporting to the Acting Director, this is a full-time, one-year term position, with the possibility for renewal. The position involves curatorial and academic engagement experience, spearheads hands-on learning sessions, and provides a professional bridge to long term museum careers.

The Academic Coordinator I will serve as a critical member of an ambitious and collaborative Museum team within a University environment. The Coordinator will have a deep interest in visual art and museum practice and have a commitment to working as part of a collegial, dynamic team. The incumbent will participate in the full range of curatorial activities and contribute to the museum’s exhibitions and programs to best reflect the curriculum and the student body. Success in this position requires expertise in building and maintaining relationships with a diverse range of faculty, staff, and students and a facility for navigating university hierarchies. The ideal candidate will possess a demonstrated commitment to object-centered learning and advanced skills in planning and implementing collection-based projects in course curricula and the use of museum galleries as alternate classroom spaces for non-credit courses. The incumbent will also excel at facilitating collaboration toward positive outcomes for all stakeholders and demonstrate the ability to promote collaborative teamwork, creativity, and open communication with diverse constituencies.

Duties include:

  1. Actively participate in all aspects of a dynamic museum program
  2. Support interdisciplinary curricular use of the museum’s collections. This includes working with faculty, lecturers, and staff (this includes curators and archivist, collections manager etc) to select and make available works of art, architecture and design. This also requires giving lectures and leading seminar sessions on selected works for designated classes.
  3. Curate exhibitions.
  4. Assist Museum staff and guest curators with research and planning for exhibitions and develop associated publications.
  5. Assist with and develop public programs and events
  6. Contribute to the ongoing assessment, refinement, and strengthening of collections
  7. Serve as a liaison between the AD&A Museum and the larger UC Santa Barbara academic community.
  8. Contribute to and write for museum publications, including the invite/calendar, website, press releases, brochures, and other, as needed, materials.
  9. Assist with donor relations and development
  10. Other duties as needed

Basic Qualifications (as of time of application):

  1. Ph.D. or ABD status (coursework and exams completed, only dissertation still to be completed) in art history, cultural/global studies, visual anthropology or related field.
  2. minimum of 1 year of teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Broad intellectual interests and commitment to art, students, and the public
  2. Familiarity with curricula, protocols, and areas of study at a major research university.
  3. Curatorial experience
  4. Knowledge of current exhibition practices and collection stewardship policies.
  5. Demonstrated history in developing and implementing educational and public programs
  6. Candidates with knowledge of historical or non-western fields are desired.
  7. Excellent writing, communication, and public speaking skills for multiple audiences.
  8. Ability to concurrently manage, delegate, and execute multiple tasks to meet firm deadlines along with the ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in the performance of duties with only general supervision or direction.
  9. Prior professional experience in a museum, academic art gallery, or similar non-profit institution focused on art, culture, and/or humanities public education and access.
