Position description

The Center for Geotechnical Modeling (CGM) requires a new Academic Coordinator to support execution of the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI)Operations award. The Business and Operations Lead will coordinate and oversee execution, analyses, and reporting of research operations at the Center for Geotechnical Modeling.

Other duties include but are not limited to:
Planning, Leadership, and Research Execution
• Coordinate research performed at the facility. Identify and project CGM resource demands according to projected research schedules. Work with AD to manage resource conflicts. Identify and work with engineers to secure additional resources when needed or adjust schedules. Work with researchers to develop and maintain efficient test schedules.
• Analyze various lab operations (e.g., research workflow) and develop and organize training documentation and standard operating procedures (i.e., technical steps might be written by engineers, but BOL will make sure documents are complete, organized, and maintained within a documentation structure that ensures the documentation is accessible and maintained).
• Help develop the user base by serving as an expert consultant to proposal writing investigators in all aspects of using CGM facilities.
• Guide external investigators on planning resource management when performing experiments at Davis.
Administration and Supervision
• Track operations and research activities (with help from AA), analyze the results, and work with the AD to prepare reports to NSF.
• Monitor CGM operations for compliance with NSF Cooperative agreement.
• Lead the Administrative Analyst (AA) in executing business operations of the center.
• Oversee and manage CGM budget and finances under direction of the AD.
Education and Community Outreach (ECO)
• Represent the CGM in the NHERI Education and Community Outreach committee. Coordinate CGM participation in NHERI REU and RET programs, which rely on the CGM partnering program participants with active research teams.
• Coordinate outreach activities with the UC Davis Geotechnical Graduate Student Society. Manage allocation of CGM resources (space, equipment, personnel) to support outreach.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Master of Science in science or engineering with an experimental emphasis.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Demonstrated experience in administering an experimental research program, such as experience in grant writing, resource allocation and scheduling, working with graduate student researchers, and cost recovery.

Desired experience in project management concepts such as cost management (estimating, allocating, and controlling project costs), Work Breakdown Structures, contingency, risk, Earned Value Management.

Desired experience using project management tools such as MS Project, MS Planner, Trello.

Preferred qualifications

PhD or equivalent in science or engineering with an experimental emphasis.
