Coordinator, Arctic Anthropocene Natures and Transdisciplinary Science Research Programme

The University of Oulu is seeking to hire a transdisciplinary scholar with an interest in environment and society to join its team as Programme Coordinator of a large new research hub focused on biodiversity. Located on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia in Central Finland with 15,000 students and 3,000 employees, The University of Oulu is one of the Nordic countries’ largest universities and a global leader in studies of Arctic environments and peoples. It has successfully secured funding from the Academy of Finland to build a new multi-faculty strategic research focus, “Arctic Anthropocene Natures and Transdisciplinary Science” (ANTS), which focuses on human-environment relations and biodiversity dynamics in the European Arctic. We are recruiting for a coordinator to oversee and manage this profiling area, and to help mold it into a premier international hub for collaborative research, education and public engagement. The six-year, fixed-term position begins on 1 January 2021 or as soon after as is feasible.

ANTS aims to advance research and discussion concerning the multiple societal and environmental contributors to biodiversity loss, including interaction between human agents and nature, and to strengthen the collaborative role of the natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities in current political and scientific debates about the environment. By bringing together international scholars from across disciplines, and encouraging effective public communication of science, ANTS will internationalize transdisciplinary and citizen-engaged studies of the environment and raise the University’s profile as a global leader in addressing the challenges of ecological change and biodiversity loss. The hub will organize conferences, workshops, seminars and lectures in Finland and abroad, engage in collaborative work across international academic and societal institutions, host roughly a dozen visiting scholars, and recruit several new tenure-track professors to the University.

The Coordinator will work closely with the hub’s directors and management team to organize various academic and public initiatives and will execute and oversee a range of research activities, public events and visiting scholars. This position may also involve writing grants and proposals to secure third‐party funding for new projects and programmes. It may also include the opportunity to teach and carry out independent research. The working language of the hub will be English. Primary responsibilities of this position include:

– assisting with managing and administering the creation of a new research hub in studies of biodiversity and society;

– planning and implementing the hub’s activities together with project leaders, steering group and the wider university community;

– management of the international fellowship programme (application process, arranging and overseeing visits, helping with logistical aspects of moving abroad/settling into Oulu);

– liaising with project funders (Academy of Finland), multiple faculty administrators and HR;

– assistance with programme’s financial and budgetary aspects;

– staff management (contracts, policies, etc.) and liaising with professors, postdocs, visiting fellows and PhD students;

– communications (website updates, PR, meeting minutes);

– advertising and representing the hub in Finland and beyond;

– other duties associated with managing transdisciplinary research initiatives

We are seeking a creative, motivated individual who is able to take initiative and work independently, and who enjoys working with colleagues of diverse educational/cultural backgrounds. This position would suit a candidate who is looking to move into academic programme administration, or to gain skills in programme/project management and coordination that would complement a research career. The candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent (exceptions may be made for candidates with an excellent MA and other relevant experience) and have demonstrable relevant experience in the natural sciences, social sciences or environmental humanities. Other important qualifications include:

– Excellent written and spoken English (familiarity with Finnish highly desirable);

– Experience of working in higher education, ideally with teaching experience;

– Experience in project management and communications;

– Experience of international work;

– Strong computer skills and proficiency with social media;

– Ability to work well in a team, balance multiple assignments, and deliver high-quality results on a deadline.

The position begins 1 January 2021 and runs until 31 December 2026, subject to a 6-month probation period. This is a full‐time, in‐house post based in Oulu, Finland. Job share situations will also be considered (e.g. split between two candidates, 20 hours per week). In your motivation letter, please state your preference for a full-time or part-time position. If part-time is preferred, please list which tasks would most appeal to you as well as any other time commitments/times in which you are unavailable to work.

The University of Oulu offers an attractive compensation package based on the General Collective Agreement for Finnish Universities (level 9–11 of the demand level chart, plus performance pay of up to 50% of the salary). In practice, this equates to a monthly gross salary of between €3300 – €4500, depending on experience. The University offers flexible working hours, a family‐friendly working environment and assistance with work permits and visas, if necessary.

To apply, please submit your application attached with all related appendices online by December 13, 2020 (23:59 Finnish local time). Interviews (online) are likely to take place in mid-December.

Required application attachments include:

1) a motivation letter (2 pages max),

2) CV (4 pages max),

3) publications list,

4) academic writing sample (i.e. research article, project overview or grant application), and

5) the contact details of two references (NB: the listed references will not be contacted unless you are shortlisted).
