Fisheries Data Scientist and Coordinator (Associate Specialist), Environmental Market Solutions Lab (emLab), University of California Santa Barbara

The Environmental Market Solutions Lab (emLab) is an interdisciplinary team of scientists based at UC Santa Barbara dedicated to bringing market-based solutions to the world's most pressing environmental problems. emLab conducts cutting-edge research and develops innovative policy solutions related to oceans and fisheries, land and freshwater, and climate and energy. Formerly the Sustainable Fisheries Group (SFG), emLab’s Ocean and Fisheries Program generates insights into the economics, ecology, and politics of oceans and fisheries to spur innovation in fisheries management, strategic marine spatial planning, and the blue economy.

emLab is seeking a highly motivated data analyst to provide analytical and technical support for our projects in partnership with Global Fishing Watch (GFW). GFW is an international non-profit organization dedicated to increasing transparency in the world’s fishing industry. GFW is a new technology platform that uses satellite Automated Information Systems (AIS) and Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data to monitor fishing activity around the world in near real-time. Together, emLab and GFW tackle a diverse set of ocean challenges, including illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, overfishing, and human rights abuses aboard fishing vessels.

The Fisheries Data Scientist and Coordinator will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including, but not limited to, providing data science support to international projects working with GFW data and other regional fisheries datasets; exploring new project ideas and research questions using GFW data; and developing impactful data visualizations of research findings for both scientific and general audiences. Support for international projects may include: working with collaborators in Japan to use AIS longline data to predict catch composition; collaborating with international partners to better identify forced labor on fishing vessels, or supporting emerging work to expand the GFW database beyond vessel-based satellite monitoring.

The successful candidate will have strong quantitative skills, a creative and solutions-oriented mindset, and the ability to effectively communicate scientific results to stakeholders, scientists, and policymakers.

Qualified applicants must have:

Master’s degree in data science, statistics, computer science, fisheries, environmental science and management, or a related field at time of appointment.

In addition, the candidate must have at least 1 year of experience providing analytical research support to projects related to wild capture fisheries, data exploration and visualization, or a related field at time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

● Excellent quantitative and statistical skills including experience collecting, processing, and analyzing vessel monitoring, fisheries, and/or economic data;
● Coding skills and proficiency with R and experience working with GitHub;
● Experience using relational databases, SQL, and data management tools such as BigQuery;
● Interest in data exploration and visualization;
● Ability to synthesize and communicate scientific results to a variety of partners and stakeholders;
● Excellent creative problem solving and troubleshooting skills;
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
● Ability to take initiative, self-manage, and work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team;
● Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational and time management skills;
● Excellent computer skills including fluency in Microsoft Office and Google Drive suites.

Salary and Benefits: Associate Specialist position, with salary step commensurate with qualifications. 100% time appointment for 1 year from start date, with possibility for additional year(s) of employment contingent upon performance and funding. Start date is negotiable, but ideally no later than July 1, 2020. Full benefits package included.
