Description

The Associate Director of Undergraduate Research will be an expert in the design and implementation of undergraduate microbiology curricula, including Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs). They will serve as associate director of the Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics (MIMG) Undergraduate Research Laboratories and will be responsible for assisting in the administration, development, and teaching in the Path 1 Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) and Path 2 Scientific Analysis and Communication courses for students pursing independent research experiences.

Responsibilities also include the development and teaching of a new Scientific Communication course where students that have completed their research requirements will receive additional training and mentoring in scientific writing, with the goal of authoring a research manuscript for publication. Additionally, the Associate Director would be expected to be active in Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER), in particular the assessments of students’ professional skills acquired through the curriculum.

Responsibilities:
Instruction and Curriculum Development for the MIMG Undergraduate Research Laboratories.

• Assisting in directing the Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) courses, with an emphasis on scientific communication and professional skills.
o Development and teaching of a Scientific Writing course for the preparation of undergraduate research manuscripts for publication.
o Overseeing the writing and publication of undergraduate research manuscripts.
• Assisting in general curriculum development and providing instruction for the MIMG Department for the following courses as needed:

o Medical Microbiology for Nursing Students (MIMG10)
o Research Immersion Laboratory in Microbiology (MIMG109AL)
o Advanced Research Analysis in Microbiology (MIMG109BL)
o Research Immersion Laboratory in Virology (MIMG103AL)
o Advanced Research Analysis in Virology (MIMG103BL)
o Microbiology Laboratory for Professional Schools (MIMG100L)
o Scientific Analysis and Communication I (MIMG 180A)
o Scientific Analysis and Communication II (MIMG 180B)

• Preparing and delivering student-centered, inclusive courses that incorporate evidence-based teaching practices, including but not limited to the following:

o oversee the laboratory components of each course, make clear to students the connections to the applications of concepts covered in lectures;
o supervise weekly meetings the teaching assistants (TAs) for each course, and ensure that they incorporate effective teaching practices in laboratories and discussion sections;
o offer a minimum of 2 office hours per course per week;
o provide students regular and timely feedback on all assignments, ensuring TAs do the same;
o submit student grades in accordance with university policy.

• Managing a team that includes non-academic laboratory support staff, graduate student and non-graduate student teaching assistants, and undergraduate assistants.

Scholarship and Service
• Participating in scholarly activities to support the educational experiences of undergraduates in the MIMG Department. Activities fall into, but are not limited to, these two categories: (1) assessment of MIMG courses and (2) advancing personal scholarship of teaching and learning to support curriculum development in these courses. Specific responsibilities include the following:

o Development and implementation of curricular assessments of students’ professional skills.
o Engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning by collecting data to aid in the creation and refinement of course materials.
o Disseminate the work of the MIMG Department and the outcomes of the research activities described here by publishing in respected education research journals, submitting course materials to peer-reviewed lesson plan repositories, and presenting regularly at local and national STEM education conferences.

• The Academic Administrator will serve both the campus community and the broader education research community. Specific examples of academic service include the following:

o Represent the Department to coordinate with other University initiatives regarding the success of Life Science students, the use of active learning strategies, and the promotion of diversity and inclusivity.
o Participate in faculty committees responsible for curriculum oversight and course development.
o Actively participate in Department and Division efforts to promote best-practices in teaching. This will include participating in professional development workshops and institutes, leading or helping to organize and facilitate faculty or TA workshops about effective pedagogy or assessment, participating in professional learning community activities such as weekly journal clubs supported by our Center for Education Innovation and Learning in the Sciences (CEILS).
o Attend national conferences and workshops to represent UCLA as a change agent for teaching and learning in higher education.

Qualifications
Strongly Preferred: Ph.D. in the Biological Sciences, with specific depth and breadth in the microbial sciences; demonstrated experience as instructor in Microbiology laboratory and lecture courses, with topics that include bacteriology, virology, molecular genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, microbial ecology and evolution; knowledge of relevant Environmental Health & Safety policies (i.e. biohazardous waste management, etc.).

Must have demonstrated experience in undergraduate teaching at the university level and experience with laboratory instruction in the biological sciences. Demonstrated ability to develop, evaluate, and improve instructional materials and experimental protocols, establish procedures and methods that accommodate laboratory experiment needs. Demonstrated ability to conduct experiments, make in-progress modifications of procedures, evaluate and interpret data. Ability to use computer software required for large experimental data analysis related to genome annotation, comparative genomics, and comparative microbial ecology. Ability to administer teaching laboratories which includes working with instructional laboratory staff to acquire, prepare, and distribute supplies for course experiments, organizing instructional materials for courses, supervising student work in the laboratory setting, regularly meeting with and overseeing teaching assistants, coordinating activities for discussion sections, and maintaining regular office hours.
