The SBC in the Department of Plant Sciences is a focal point for interaction between the seed industry and the research and educational resources of the UC Davis. It coordinates research to address problems of interest to the seed industry and provides continuing education in seed biology and technology. Its mission is to mobilize the research, educational and outreach resources of the University of California, in partnership with the seed and plant biotechnology industries, to facilitate discovery and commercialization of new seed technologies for agricultural and consumer benefit. The Center's budgetary oversight including funds raised through campaigns, initiatives, courses, and other stakeholder collaborations totals over $4,000,000.

Job Summary:
The Academic Administrator will have global administration and management responsibilities for all education and outreach activities of the SBC, including budgetary development and oversight, administration of all academic and staff personnel, and programmatic development. This position will require an extensive knowledge of all the scientific components of plant breeding and first-hand experience in working with the global seed and plant science industries.

Academic Administrator will be responsible for a broad range of policy-level administrative and programmatic activities for the SBC and provide leadership in short- and long-range planning.

A. Administration/Management of Programs (75%)

Academic Administrators are expected to oversee complex units with a large degree of independence. Their duties may include directing the activities of a support staff and coordinating the activities of faculty and academic staff involved in the program(s). The primary focus of the position is administration that requires academic credentials equivalent to the professorial series. They are expected to provide intellectual leadership and scholarship on a par with other research personnel in the implementation of any research-oriented program in the unit in which they serve. Administrators are expected to oversee one or more programs.

Responsibilities may include;
Planning, development and evaluation of programs;
Direction and supervision of staff;
Development of proposals for extramural funding;
Management of program resources; and
Administration of a program or unit in relation to its mission.

A candidate will be judged on the quality of performance in the specific areas of responsibility as identified in the criteria and the position description.

Professional accomplishments and scholarly achievements will be considered if they are required of the position.

More specifically, the management responsibilities will include:

  1. Broad fiscal management
    • Develop and manage the budget associated with compensation for instructors, instructional and logistical activities, travel and lodging, updating of existing classes, and new courses and marketing initiatives
    • Hire and manage all staff: core faculty, program representative,
    guest speakers and administrative assistants. Responsible for key human resources practices such as hiring, conducting performance evaluations, and supporting collaboration and high performance teams

    • Supervise employees, provide guidance and oversight for staff, establishing goals in consultation with team members and ensuring that goals are met

  2. Recruitment of global applicants to all courses
    • Work directly with seed industry executives to encourage sponsorship of their qualified employees to participate in the program
    • Advertise using direct mail, print media, internet and national and international seed association publications
    • Attend industry meetings around the world and give presentations to market the all courses and activities of the SBC
    • Maintain and update the all program websites to reflect programmatic goals and current and future activities

  3. Expansion of the program through needs assessment, marketing efforts, instructor recruitment and new course development
    • Determine depth of market for the SBC courses
    • Recruit additional instructors as needed to meet market demand
    • Develop new long and short courses to meet the educational demands of the international seed industry
    • Be vigilant for new global education program opportunities

  4. Teaching and the Development of New Courses
    • Working with instructors constantly to evaluate the curriculum of all courses to assure that it is relevant and as up to date as possible
    • Add new curriculum to courses as the state-of-the-art changes
    • Be the lead instructor of the flagship courses, such as Plant Breeding Academy, Seed Production, etc.
    • Seek input from the Seed Advisory Council, industry leaders, industry human resource leads and former students to determine educational needs that may be missing.

B. Professional Competence (20%)

Develop and implement overall communications and outreach strategy to highlight individual and collaborative research and core programs and special initiatives of the SBC.
Manage SBC's campus and external communications, including website content and design, annual report, marketing and development materials, event publicity and social media.
Develop content and oversee production schedule for SBC website and bi-monthly e-newsletters.
Oversee and coordinate with web designers and writer about program communications.
Work with designers to produce high-impact communication pieces, including annual report, one-pagers, brochures, and external development materials.
Consult with public information and marketing professionals in University Communications as appropriate.
Attend external meetings held in California and other national and global locations as needed representing SBC and UC Davis. Serve on campus-wide committees, industry boards and committees.
Seek opportunities to identify programmatic support and new initiatives.
Serve as the Center point person to lead their Seed Advisory Board. Maintain communications, lead strategic meetings, ensure that there is a diverse group of leaders represented.
The candidate's professional activities should be scrutinized for evidence of
achievement and leadership in the area of responsibility and of demonstrated
evidence of continued professional growth and ability to effectively work
collegially within their unit and on campus.

C. University and Public Service (5%)

Academic Administrators will participate in the administration of their home unit and campus through appropriate roles in governance and policy formation; and will also represent the University in both the public and private sector. Such activities may include:
Participation in campus governance through committee membership (including Academic Federation committees), community activities and projects that are University-wide in scope.
Service in a liaison capacity with other public and private agencies.

Evidence of candidate’s commitment to service through accomplishments or contribution should be documented.

Qualifications: PhD in Plant Breeding, Agronomy, Horticulture Science, Plant Pathology, Plant Sciences or related field. MUST have Plant Breeding experience in public or private programs. Supervisory experience preferred.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

Term of Appointment: This position is initially available for 2 years with potential for extension.
