Position description

The Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology seeks an Academic Administrator III to provide instruction on quarterly basis including summer sessions.

Duties:

Teach lecture courses on various topics in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, as well as other topics as needed at the undergraduate level. This will include planning and coordinating discussion activities for multiple sections of courses; supervising course teaching assistants; managing the acquisition and maintenance of course materials; supervising student projects; and maintaining office hours.

Supervise maintenance and content update as required on TA resource Website and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Lab Website. Setup and update MyUCLA and BruinLearn. Conduct weekly meetings with Ecology & Evolutionary Biology course Teaching Assistants (TA) and Learning Assistants (LA) to train on lab grading and instruction.

Evaluate Teaching Assistants and Learning Assistants in lab instruction and course support on a quarterly basis. Prepare lectures and course materials. Check Lab Papers for plagiarism and compile reports for submission to the Dean of Students where appropriate. Prepare and administer Final exams and assign grades, and supervise Teaching Assistants.

Prepare materials for web site and virtual office hours, respond to questions by e-mail or via web interface, and interact with students in office hours.

Development, Supervision & Coordination of lab components of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Courses

Develop, test and adjust laboratory exercises for courses in consultation with instructors. Organize and facilitate faculty meetings within core courses with lab components to update experiments and ensure continuity with lecture material.

Participate in review and update of laboratory manuals and printed materials as relates to the labs. Solicit feedback from faculty, TAs and students on effectiveness of laboratory components of courses. Investigate improvements to the design of laboratory exercises and methods, including projection of costs and equipment needs.

Write grants for development of laboratory components in coordination with Vice Chair for Undergraduate Studies. Integrate computer modeling and database analysis into lab components, including but not limited to DNA sequencing.

Revise and submit animal and human research protocols (IRB), training of students in laboratory safety, overseeing the proper care and handling of the animals.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in a life science discipline (Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience or other related field); experience in undergraduate laboratory instruction at the university level; broad-based knowledge of introductory life science concepts; specific knowledge of life science undergraduate teaching laboratory methods and experiments; demonstrated skill in the pedagogy of teaching life science laboratories; ability to author instructions, handouts, laboratory manuals, and other teaching materials; skill in use of computer software (e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Toolbook, Excel, FRODO, INSIGHT, and RASMOL).
